Refueling problem?

The worst-case scenario would be the charcoal canister needing to be replaced. This can run anywhere from $350 up to $550 parts and labor. This depends on your location and who does the work. As long as the engine is running normally with no loss of power and you can live with the check engine light being illuminated you could probably continue to drive with no issues. However not being able to fuel the car is a pain in the neck. Normally when fueling clicks off right away this is an indication that the air drain tube on the charcoal canister is clogged or the diaphragm is ruptured. 95% of the time spiders build a cobweb nest up in this drain tube and it sticks the diaphragm. This in turn will not allow the pressure in the tank to push over into the charcoal canister to be purified then dump out into the atmosphere. This will cause the fuel filler neck to click off every time. Canister does not necessarily need to be replaced but this drain tube needs to be checked and cleaned. The malfunction codes normally will get you in the ballpark of what's going on.
