Power Steering Pump Belt
2001-02 Models
- Loosen the power steering pump mounting nut (A) and bolt (B).
- Turn the adjusting nut (C) to get the proper belt tension, then retighten the mounting nut and bolt.
- Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times, then stop the engine and recheck the tension of the belt.
Belt tension is automatically maintained by a belt tensioner. No adjustments are necessary.

NOTE
There are two ways to inspect the belt tension: the Belt Tension Gauge Method and the Deflection Method. Both are outlined below.
Belt Tension Gauge Method
- Attach the belt tension gauge to the belt with the gauge face toward the engine, and measure the tension of the belt. Follow the manufacture's instructions. If the belt is worn or damaged, replace it.
NOTERemove the belt tension gauge carefully to avoid hitting the gauge reset lever. - The tension should be:
- Used Belt: 88-120 lbs. (390-540 N)
- New Belt: 165-198 lbs. (740-880 N)
- If you installed a new belt, run the engine for 5 minutes, then readjust the belt to the used belt specifications.
Deflection Method
- Apply a force of 22 lbs. (98 N) and measure the deflection between the power steering pump pulley (A) and the crankshaft pulley (B).
- The deflection should be:
- Used Belt: 0.51-0.65 in. (13.0-16.5mm)
- New Belt: 0.33-0.43 in. (8.5-11.0mm)
- If you installed a new belt, run the engine for 5 minutes, then readjust the belt to the used belt specifications
- Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.
- On 2001-02 models, check that the pointer (A) on the auto-tensioner housing is not beyond the edge of the indicator rib (B) on the tensioner base.
Removal & Installation
2001-02 Models
Alternator-A/C Compressor Belt
- Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Move the auto-tensioner (A) to relieve tension from the alternator belt (B), and remove the alternator belt.
- Install the new belt in the reverse order of removal.
The power steering pump has two fasteners securing it to a bracket mounted on the engine. The right side locknut and fastener are installed through a slotted bracket and the left side fastener allows the pump to pivot.
- Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Loosen the right side locknut and left side pivot nut.
- Move the pump by turning the adjustment nut on the right side bracket. Turn the adjustment nut counterclockwise to release the belt tension.
- Remove the belt from the pulleys, one pulley at a time.
To install:
- Install the belt around the pulleys, beginning with the largest pulley first.
- Follow the adjustment procedure to correctly tension the belt.
- Tighten the right side locknut and left side pivot bolt and then check the belt tension. If the belt tension is not within specification, repeat the adjustment procedure until the proper belt tension is achieved.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
NOTE
For this procedure, you will need a Belt tension release tool (Snap-on YA9317) or equivalent.
- Move the auto-tensioner (A) with the belt tension release tool to relieve tension from the drive belt (B), then remove the drive belt.
- Install the new belt in the reverse order of removal.
