Cylinder Head
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Procedure is mentioned as follows:----
- Release the fuel system pressure.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Negative battery cableRight-hand engine undercover - Drain the engine coolant.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
CamshaftsCylinder head bolts in several passesCylinder head with the intake manifoldAir hose from the intake manifold2 bolts and the air tubeIntake manifold and gasketAir hose from the cylinder head portAir hoseFuel delivery pipe and the injectorsOil pressure switch
To install:
- Install or connect the following:
Oil pressure switchFuel injectors and the delivery pipeAir hose to the cylinder head portIntake manifold with new gaskets. Tighten the nut/bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).Air tube with the 2 boltsAir hose to the intake manifold - Clean the gasket mating surfaces using care not to damage the aluminum components, replace the gasket; then, lower the cylinder head onto the engine. Be sure the dowel pins are aligned and no hoses or wires are between the head and cylinder block.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts in 2 progressive steps, as follows:
- Apply a light coat of engine oil to the cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts, in several passes, in sequence, to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
- Mark the front of the cylinder head bolt with paint.
- Retighten the cylinder head bolts by 90 degrees in sequence.
- Retighten an additional 90 degrees and be sure that the paint mark is now positioned toward the rear.
- Install or connect the following:
Intake and exhaust camshaftsNegative battery cable - Refill the engine with coolant, start the engine, warm up and check for leaks.
- Bleed the cooling system and top off coolant as necessary.
- Install the right-hand engine undercover.
- Check ignition timing and road test the vehicle for proper operation.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
- Release the fuel system pressure.
- Remove or disconnect the following:

- Remove or disconnect the following:

To install:
- Install or connect the following:

- Retighten the cylinder head bolts by 90 degrees in sequence.
- Retighten an additional 90 degrees and be sure that the paint mark is now positioned toward the rear.
- For 2002, tighten the cylinder head bolts in 3 progressive steps, as follows:
- Apply a light coat of engine oil to the cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts, in sequence, to 15 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts, in sequence, to 30 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
- Mark the front of the cylinder head bolt with paint.
- Retighten the cylinder head bolts by 90 degrees in sequence.
- Install or connect the following:
Intake and exhaust camshaftsNegative battery cable - Refill the engine with coolant, start the engine, warm up and check for leaks.
- Bleed the cooling system and top off coolant as necessary.
- Install the right-hand engine undercover.
- Check ignition timing and road test the vehicle for proper operation.
