Exhaust Manifold
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Procedure is as follows:----
The details are for 3.4L Engine, 3.5L Engine & 3.6L Engine.
3.4L Engine
The exhaust manifolds are conventional iron castings. The left and right manifolds are connected by a crossover pipe. Use care with the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head fasteners. The cylinder heads are aluminum.
Left (Front) Side- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Drain the cooling system.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Negative battery cableThrottle body air inlet ductRight side engine mount strut bracketRadiator inlet hoseThermostat bypass pipeExhaust crossover pipe heat shieldExhaust crossover pipeLeft side exhaust manifold heat shieldLeft side exhaust manifold and discard the gasket
To install:
- Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
- Install or connect the following:
Left side exhaust manifold gasketLeft side exhaust manifold. Torque the nuts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).Left side exhaust manifold heat shield. Torque the fasteners to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).Exhaust crossover pipe. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).Exhaust crossover pipe heat shield. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).Thermostat bypass pipe. Torque the fastener to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).Radiator inlet hose to the engineRight side engine mount strut bracket. Torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).Throttle body air inlet ductNegative battery cable - Fill the cooling system
- Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
- Check and top off all fluid levels if necessary.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Negative battery cableThrottle body air inlet ductAccelerator cable bracket from the throttle bodyManifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensorExhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve - Rotate the engine for access.
Ignition moduleIgnition coils and bracketSpark plug wires from the right bank spark plugsHeated Oxygen (HO 2 ) sensor electrical connectorEVAP solenoid bracketFasteners for the crossover pipe from the right bank exhaust manifoldCatalytic converterRight side exhaust manifold heat shieldsRight side exhaust manifoldRight side exhaust manifold gasketEGR valve pipe, if replacing the exhaust manifoldHO 2 sensor, if replacing the exhaust manifold
To install:
- Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
- Install or connect the following:
HO 2 sensor, if removed. Torque the sensor to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).EGR valve pipe, if removed. Torque the fastener to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).Exhaust manifold gasketExhaust manifold. Torque the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).Both manifold heat shields. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).Catalytic converter. Torque the fasteners to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).Exhaust manifold crossover pipe. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).HO 2 sensor electrical connectorEVAP solenoid bracketPlug wires to the spark plugsIgnition moduleIgnition coils and bracket. Torque the fastener to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). - Rotate the engine to its original position.
- Install or connect the following:
EGR valve to the intake manifoldMAP sensorAccelerator cable bracket to the throttle body. Torque the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).Throttle body air inlet ductNegative battery cable - Start the engine and inspect for leaks, repair if necessary.
Left Side
- Remove the right engine mount strut bracket.
- Remove the thermostat bypass pipe.
- Reposition the radiator inlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing.
- Remove the radiator inlet hose from the thermostat housing.
- Remove the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield bolts.
- Remove the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield.
- Remove the exhaust crossover pipe nuts from the left exhaust manifold studs.
- Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
- Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.
- Remove the exhaust manifold nuts.
- Remove the exhaust manifold.
- Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.
- Clean the exhaust manifold sealing surfaces.
To install:
- Install a NEW exhaust manifold gasket onto the studs.
- Install the exhaust manifold.
NOTEUse the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems. - Install the exhaust manifold nuts and tighten the nuts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
- Position the exhaust manifold heat shield to the exhaust manifold.
- Install the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Install the exhaust crossover pipe nuts to the left exhaust manifold studs and tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Position the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield to the crossover pipe.
- Install the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield bolts and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Install the radiator inlet hose to the thermostat housing.
- Position the radiator inlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing.
- Install the thermostat bypass pipe.
- Install the right engine mount strut bracket.
- Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
- Set the park brake.
- Shift the transaxle into Neutral.
- Remove the left and right engine mount strut bolts. Swing the engine mount struts aside.
- Install the J 41131 rotation tool.
- Pull on the engine in order to rotate the engine forward.
- Tighten the J 41131 tool.
- Remove the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
- Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve.
- Remove the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Connector Position Assurance (CPA) retainer.
- Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector.
- Remove the HO2S electrical connector clip from the ignition coil bracket.
- Remove the ignition coil assembly.
- Remove the spark plug wires from the right bank spark plugs.
- Remove the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield bolts.
- Remove the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield.
- Remove the exhaust crossover pipe nuts from the right exhaust manifold.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the catalytic converter.
- Remove the exhaust manifold upper and lower heat shield bolts.
- Remove the exhaust manifold upper and lower heat shields.
- Remove the exhaust manifold nuts.
- Remove the exhaust manifold.
- Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Clean the exhaust manifold sealing surfaces.
- If replacing the exhaust manifold, remove the following components:
EGR valve pipeHO2S
To install:
- If the exhaust manifold was replaced, install the following components:
EGR valve pipeHO2S - Raise and support the vehicle.
- Install a NEW exhaust manifold gasket onto the studs.
- Install the exhaust manifold.
NOTEUse the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems. - Install the exhaust manifold nuts and tighten the nuts to 12 ft. lbs. - Position the exhaust manifold upper heat shield and install the bolts finger tight.
- Position the exhaust manifold lower heat shield and install the bolts finger tight.
- Tighten the exhaust manifold upper and lower heat shield bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Install the catalytic converter.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the exhaust crossover pipe nuts to the right exhaust manifold and tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Position the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield to the crossover pipe.
- Install the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield bolts and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Install the spark plug wires to the right bank spark plugs.
- Install the ignition coil assembly.
- Connect the HO2S electrical connector.
- Install the CPA retainer.
- Install the HO2S electrical connector clip to the ignition coil bracket.
- Install the EGR valve.
- Install the MAP sensor.
- Release the tension on the J 41131 tool.
- Install the engine mount struts.
- Remove the J 41131 tool.
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
Left Side
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove the left torque strut bracket bolts.
- Remove the left torque strut bracket.
- Remove the left exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
- Remove the left exhaust manifold heat shield.
- Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.
- Disconnect the exhaust pipes from the manifold.
- Remove the exhaust manifold bolts from the left cylinder head.
- Remove the left exhaust manifold.
- Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.
To install:
- Position a NEW exhaust manifold gasket onto the left exhaust manifold.
- Install the exhaust manifold bolts into the left exhaust manifold.
- Place the left exhaust manifold, exhaust manifold gasket and bolts as an assembly in position on the left cylinder head.
- Install the exhaust manifold bolts into the left cylinder head. Tighten the exhaust manifold bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Connect the exhaust pipes.
- Install the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. Tighten the ECT sensor to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
- Install NEW O-rings on the crankshaft position sensor.
- Place the left exhaust manifold heat shield in position.
- Install the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts. Tighten the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Install the left torque strut bracket.
- Install the left torque strut bracket bolts. Tighten the left torque strut bracket bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove the right exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
- Remove the right exhaust manifold heat shield.
- Remove the exhaust manifold bolts from the right cylinder head.
- Remove the right exhaust manifold.
- Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.
- Remove the block heater cartridge, if equipped.
- Remove the right knock sensor bolt.
- Remove the right knock sensor.
- Remove the crankshaft position sensor bolt.
- Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
- Remove and discard the crankshaft position sensor O-ring, if damaged.
To install
- Install a NEW O-ring on the crankshaft position sensor, if damaged.
- Position the crankshaft position sensor into the cylinder block.
- Install the crankshaft position sensor bolt. Tighten the crankshaft position sensor bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Position the right knock sensor to the cylinder block as shown.
- Install the knock sensor bolt. Tighten the knock sensor bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm). Ensure proper knock sensor orientation.
- Install the block heater cartridge, if equipped.
- Position a NEW exhaust manifold gasket onto the right exhaust manifold.
- Install the exhaust manifold bolts into the right exhaust manifold.
- Place the right exhaust manifold, exhaust manifold gasket and bolts as an assembly in position on the right cylinder head.
- Connect the exhaust pipes.
- Install the exhaust manifold bolts into the right cylinder head. Tighten the exhaust manifold bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Place the right exhaust manifold heat shield in position.
- Install the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts. Tighten the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
