The transaxle assembly must be removed to perform this service. This requires special tooling to support the engine assembly while the transaxle and sub-frame are lowered from under the vehicle.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
WARNINGWhen removing the seal, use care so that no damage occurs to the crankshaft. Once the seal is removed, inspect the crankshaft surface for any nicks or burrs. Repair or replace crankshaft as necessary.

To install:
- Install or connect the following:
New oil seal lubricated with engine oil, using an Oil Seal Installer tool J 34686 until it is seated properly over the crankshaftFlywheelTransmission assemblyNegative battery cable - Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove the engine/transaxle assembly.
- Separate the transaxle from the engine.
- Remove the flywheel.
- Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts. Using the pry points located at the edge of the crankshaft rear oil seal housing, shear the RTV sealant.
- Remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seal housing.
To install:
- Install the 6 mm (0.236 in) guide pins into the 2 crankshaft rear oil seal housing corner bolt holes of the engine block.
- Install the EN-47839 with the J-42183 (1, 2) onto the rear of the crankshaft flange.
- Place a 3mm (0.118 in) bead of RTV sealant, GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) or equivalent, to the NEW crankshaft rear oil seal housing as shown (1).
NOTEDO NOT allow any engine oil on the area where the crankshaft rear oil seal housing is to be installed. - Install the crankshaft rear oil seal housing to the engine block.
- Remove the 6 mm (0.236 in) guides from the engine block.
- Install the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts. Tighten the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Remove the EN-47839 and J-42183 (1, 2) from the crankshaft flange.
- Place the engine flywheel in position on the crankshaft.
- Install 2 NEW bolts in location at the top and bottom of the engine flywheel bolt pattern allowing the engine flywheel to hang in position.
- Install an engine holding tool.
- Install the remaining NEW engine flywheel bolts. Tighten the NEW engine flywheel bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Tighten the NEW engine flywheel bolts an additional 45 degrees.
- Install the engine/transaxle.
