Continental



Removal And Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait for at least 1 minute for the SRS or air bag module to deplete its energy.
  2. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  3. Remove the driver-s side air bag module by removing or disconnecting the following:
    CAUTION
    Place the SRS module in a safe place with the front facing upward.



    SRS module-to-steering wheel bolts, (located at both sides of the steering wheel)
    SRS module (carefully) and disconnect the electrical connector
    Horn switch electrical connector
  4. Remove the passenger-s side SRS module by removing or disconnecting the following:
    CAUTION
    Place the SRS module in a safe place with the front facing upward



    Push inward on the 2 glove box door tabs and lower it
    SRS module-s electrical connector
    SRS module-to-instrument panel bolts and the module
  5. Remove the instrument panel by removing or disconnecting the following:
    NOTE
    Check the upper cowl clips for damage; if necessary, replace them.



    Floor or mini console (if equipped)
    Rear seat climate control air duct sleeve (if equipped)
    Left side instrument panel insulator pushpins and the insulator; then, disconnect the courtesy lamp
    Instrument panel steering column cover screws and the cover
    Pull the hood release handle, remove the screws and move it aside
    Pull the parking brake handle, remove the bolts, the parking brake release handle and the cable
    Steering column opening cover reinforcement-to-instrument panel bolts and the cover reinforcement
    Release the cable and the conduit from the parking brake actuator
    Steering column
    Loosen the bolt and disconnect the left side outboard bulkhead electrical connector
    Loosen the bolt and disconnect the left side inboard bulkhead electrical connector
    Heated seat switch electrical connectors (if equipped)
    2 steering column mounting support-to-instrument cowl brace bolts
    Instrument panel dash brace-to-instrument panel bolt
    Instrument panel dash brace nut and move the brace aside
    Right side instrument panel insulator pushpins and the insulator; then, disconnect the courtesy lamp
    Vacuum harness connector
    In-line electrical harness connector
    Scuff plate and the cowl trim panel (located on the right side)
    Antenna connector
    Brake shift interlock actuator cable
    Pry out the instrument panel defroster opening grille assembly, disconnect the 2 electrical connectors and remove the assembly
    Upper instrument panel-to-cowl screws
    Instrument panel support-to-cowl side nut (located on the right side)
    Instrument panel support-to-cowl side bolts (located on the left side); then, loosen the instrument panel support-to-cowl side captive bolt
    Pull the instrument panel rearward; then, disconnect the Electronic Air Temperature Control (EATC) hose from the heater plenum and make sure all electrical connectors are disconnected
    Instrument panel with the help of an assistant
  6. Loosen the screw and disconnect the PCM electrical connector.
  7. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  8. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Do not bend any part of the air conditioning damper door shaft for it is brittle and will break.



    2 metal cover-to-heater/air conditioning housing screws and the metal cover (located below the heater core cover)
    Electrical harness connector (at the heater core cover); then, remove the air conditioning electronic blend door actuator-to-heater/air conditioning housing screws and the actuator
    Air conditioning air intake flue damper assist spring
  9. Depress the air conditioning damper door shaft locking ramp, disconnect it from the air temperature control door shaft, swing the locking ramp counterclockwise and remove it from the air conditioning damper door shaft.
  10. Move the air conditioning damper door shaft counterclockwise and remove it.
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Heater core cover-to-heater/air conditioning housing screws and the cover
    Heater core cover seal
    Heater core from the heater/air conditioning housing

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    WARNING
    Do not bend any part of the air conditioning damper door shaft for it is brittle and will break.



    Heater core to the heater/air conditioning housing
    Heater core cover seal
    Heater core cover and the cover-to-heater/air conditioning housing screws
    Air conditioning damper door shaft and move it clockwise and install it
    Air conditioning damper door shaft locking ramp, swing the locking ramp clockwise and connect it to the air temperature control door shaft
    Air conditioning air intake flue damper assist spring
  2. At the heater core cover, install the air conditioning electronic blend door actuator and the actuator-to-heater/air conditioning housing screws; then, connect the electrical harness connector.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Metal cover and the 2 metal cover-to-heater/air conditioning housing screws (located below the heater core cover)
    Heater hoses to the heater core
    PCM electrical connector and tighten the screw
  4. Install the instrument panel by installing or connecting the following:

    Instrument panel with the help of an assistant
    Pull the instrument panel rearward; then, connect the Electronic Air Temperature Control (EATC) hose to the heater plenum and make sure all electrical connectors are connected
    Instrument panel support-to-cowl side bolts and the instrument panel support-to-cowl side captive bolt (located on the left side)
    Instrument panel support-to-cowl side nut (located on the right side)
    Upper instrument panel-to-cowl screws
    2 electrical connectors and the instrument panel defroster opening grille assembly
    Brake shift interlock actuator cable
    Antenna connector
    Scuff plate and the cowl trim panel (located on the right side)
    In-line electrical harness connector
    Vacuum harness connector
    Right side instrument panel insulator and secure the insulator with the pushpins; then, connect the courtesy lamp
    Instrument panel dash brace and the brace nut
    Instrument panel dash brace-to-instrument panel bolt
    2 steering column mounting support-to-instrument cowl brace bolts
    Heated seat switch electrical connectors (if equipped)
    Left side inboard bulkhead electrical connector and tighten the bolt
    Left side outboard bulkhead electrical connector and tighten the bolt
    Steering column
    Cable and the conduit to the parking brake actuator
    Steering column opening cover reinforcement and the cover reinforcement-to-instrument panel bolts
    Parking brake handle, the bolts and the cable
    Hood release handle and the screws
    Instrument panel steering column cover and the cover screws
    Left side instrument panel insulator and secure the insulator with the pushpins; then, connect the courtesy lamp
    Rear seat climate control air duct sleeve, if equipped
    Floor or mini console, if equipped
  5. Install the passenger-s side SRS module by installing or connecting the following:

    SRS module and torque the module-to-instrument panel bolts to 62-97 inch lbs. (7-11 Nm)
    SRS module-s electrical connector
    Glove box door
  6. Install the driver-s side air bag module by installing or connecting the following:

    Horn switch electrical connector
    Electrical connector and install the SRS module
    SRS module-to-steering wheel bolts (located at both sides of the steering wheel), and torque the bolts to 90-122 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm)
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
  9. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the center console.
  3. Disarm the air bag system and remove the air bag diagnostic monitor and bracket.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Screw retaining the air transfer duct to the heater outlet floor duct. Push the transfer duct inside of the heater outlet floor duct
    3 screws retaining the heater outlet floor duct to the heater core cover and release the retaining tabs on each side of the duct and remove the duct
    Heater hoses from the heater core, and plug the heater core tubes and the hoses to prevent coolant loss.
    Vacuum supply hose (the black hose) from the vacuum source in the engine compartment
    Vacuum supply hose (the black hose) from the air conditioning vacuum reservoir tank
    Release the 4 retaining tabs and remove the 2 clips and the heater core cover containing the heater core
    Heater dash panel seal and the vacuum hose from the heater core cover
    Retaining screw and the heater core bracket from the cover
    Heater core from the cover
    Heater core case seal from the heater core
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Heater core case seal on the heater core
    Heater core into the cover
    Retaining screw and the heater core bracket onto the cover
    Heater dash panel seal and the vacuum hose onto the heater core cover
    4 retaining tabs, 2 clips and the heater core cover containing the heater core
    Vacuum supply hose (the black hose) to the air conditioning vacuum reservoir tank
    Vacuum supply hose (the black hose) to the vacuum source in the engine compartment
    Unplug the hoses and the core tubes (if installing old core)
    Heater hoses onto the heater core
    Heater outlet floor duct, engage the retaining tabs and tighten the 3 screws retaining the heater outlet floor duct to the heater core cover
    Push the transfer duct out of the heater outlet floor duct
    Tighten the screw retaining the air transfer duct to the heater outlet floor duct
    Air bag diagnostic monitor and bracket
    Center console
  2. Connect the negative battery cable.

Escort, ZX2 And Tracer



Removal And Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait for at least 1 minute for the SRS or air bag module to deplete its energy.
  2. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  3. On the Coupe, remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
  4. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  5. Place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position. Lock the steering column.
  6. Remove the steering wheel by removing or disconnecting the following:
    CAUTION
    Place the SRS module in a safe place with the front facing upward



    SRS module-to-steering wheel bolts
    SRS module (carefully), and disconnect the horn switch and the SRS electrical connectors



    Steering wheel bolt and discard it
    Press the steering wheel from the steering column

  7. Remove the passenger-s side SRS module by removing or disconnecting the following:
    CAUTION
    Place the SRS module in a safe place with the front facing upward.



    Push inward on the 2 glove box door tabs and lower it
    SRS module-s electrical connector
    SRS module-to-instrument panel bolts and the module
  8. Remove the instrument panel by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Floor console
    Screw located at the center instrument panel finish panel
    Pull the center instrument panel finish panel straight out from the instrument panel reinforcement (Coupe models only)
    Power point socket electrical connectors and remove the center instrument panel finish panel, if equipped
    Control box side cover pushpins and the covers located on both sides
    Radio antenna lead-in cable, located at the instrument panel reinforcement
    Radio antenna lead-in cable
    Transmission control selector dial bezel screws; then, place the transmission control selector dial bezel sideways
    PCM electrical connector bolt and move the PCM aside
    2 rear side PCM bracket nuts, the 2 bolts; then, the PCM and bracket as an assembly
    Rotate the temperature control switch to the COOL position and disconnect the heater control cable
    Hood latch control handle nut; then, position the hood latch control handle and cable aside
    Instrument panel steering column cover screw and release the cover
    Light switch rheostat resistor electrical connector and remove the instrument panel steering column cover (Coupe models only)
    Steering column shroud screws and remove the shrouds
    Steering column bracket bolts and lower the steering column
    Pull upward on the front door scuff plates
    Cowl side trim panel pushpins and the panels, located on both sides
    Interior fuse junction panel electrical connector
    Lower instrument panel reinforcement in-line electrical connector, located on the left side
    Vacuum line harness connector
    Lower instrument panel reinforcement in-line electrical connector, located on the right side
    Blower motor resistor electrical connector
    Instrument panels end panels, located on both sides
    Upper and lower instrument panel-to-chassis bolts, located on both sides
    Upper and lower instrument panel reinforcement-to-chassis bolts, located on both sides
    Cover and the upper instrument panel reinforcement bolt
    Slightly, pull the instrument panel rearward and disconnect the main electrical wiring connectors, located on the left side
    Instrument panel
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Antenna lead from the heater core housing
    Vacuum control motor vacuum connector
    Vacuum lines from the retainer at the evaporator housing
    Pushpins, the windshield defroster nozzle connector-s screws and the connectors
    Air conditioning evaporator outlet duct clamp screw
    Lower heater core housing-to-chassis nut, the upper heater core housing-to-chassis nuts and the heater core housing
    Heater dash panel seal
    Heater core cover-to-housing screws and the cover
    Heater core from the housing

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Heater core to the housing
    Heater core cover and the cover-to-housing screws
    Heater dash panel seal
    Lower heater core housing, the upper heater core housing-to-chassis nuts and the heater core housing-to-chassis nut
    Air conditioning evaporator outlet duct clamp screw
    Windshield defroster nozzle connector-s screws, the connectors and the pushpins
    Vacuum lines to the retainer at the evaporator housing
    Vacuum control motor vacuum connector
    Antenna lead to the heater core housing
  2. Install the instrument panel by installing or connecting the following:

    Instrument panel
    Main electrical wiring connectors (located on the left side), and install the instrument panel
    Upper instrument panel reinforcement bolt and the cover
    Upper and lower instrument panel reinforcement-to-chassis bolts (both sides)
    Upper and lower instrument panel-to-chassis bolts (both sides)
    Instrument panels end panels (both sides)
    Blower motor resistor electrical connector
    Lower instrument panel reinforcement in-line electrical connector, located on the right side
    Vacuum line harness connector.
    Lower instrument panel reinforcement in-line electrical connector, located on the left side
    Interior fuse junction panel electrical connector
    Cowl side trim panels and secure the panels with the pushpins, located on both sides
    Front door scuff plates, located on both sides
    Steering column and the steering column bracket bolts
    Steering column shrouds and the shroud screws
    Light switch rheostat resistor electrical connector and install the instrument panel steering column cover (coupe models only)
    Instrument panel steering column cover and the cover screw
    Hood latch control handle and cable and tighten the hood latch control handle nut
    Heater control cable
    PCM/bracket, the 2 PCM/bracket nuts and the 2 bolts
    PCM electrical connector and the bolt
    Transmission control selector dial bezel screws
    Radio antenna lead-in cable
    Radio antenna lead-in cable
    Control box side covers and secure with the pushpins, located at both sides
    Power point socket electrical connectors and install the center instrument panel finish panel, if equipped
    Center instrument panel finish panel screw
    Floor console
  3. Install the passenger-s side SRS module by installing or connecting the following:

    SRS module and torque the module-to-instrument panel bolts to 62-97 inch lbs. (7-11 Nm)
    SRS module-s electrical connector
    Glove box door
  4. Install the steering wheel by installing or connecting the following:

    Steering wheel to the steering column
    New steering wheel bolt and torque it to 26-33 ft. lbs. (34-46 Nm)
    SRS module-to-steering wheel bolts and torque the bolts to 89-123 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm)
    SRS module and connect the electrical connector
  5. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
  6. On the Coupe, install the air cleaner outlet tube.
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
  9. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.

Removal & Installation
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Recover the A/C refrigerant, if equipped.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Radio
    Left and right lower panels
    Data link electrical connector
    Steering column upper shroud
    Audio unit control switch, if equipped
    Steering column lower shroud
    Steering column
    Instrument cluster
    Glove compartment
    Passenger air bag module
    Climate control and audio trim panel
    Ash tray
    Heater core housing assembly panel
    Center console
    Instrument panel upper retaining screws
    Instrument panel side trim panels
    Instrument panel side bolts
    Instrument panel bolts behind the instrument cluster, climate control and audio panel and passenger air bag module
    Defroster tubes
    Instrument panel
    Heater hoses
    A/C evaporator refrigerant lines
    Cross vehicle beam
    Rear footwell ventilation hoses
    Heater housing wiring harness
    Heater housing. Refer to the illustrations for housing fastener locations.

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Heater housing. Refer to the illustrations for housing fastener locations and torque specifications.
    Heater housing wiring harness
    Rear footwell ventilation hoses
    Cross vehicle beam. Tighten the beam fasteners to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and the beam bracket bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
    A/C evaporator refrigerant lines
    Heater hoses
    Instrument panel
    Defroster tubes
    Instrument panel bolts behind the instrument cluster, climate control and audio panel and passenger air bag module
    Instrument panel side bolts
    Instrument panel side trim panels
    Instrument panel upper retaining screws
    Center console
    Heater core housing assembly panel
    Ash tray
    Climate control and audio trim panel
    Passenger air bag module
    Glove compartment
    Instrument cluster
    Steering column. Tighten the nuts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) and the Torx® screw to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
    Steering column lower shroud
    Audio unit control switch, if equipped
    Steering column upper shroud
    Data link electrical connector
    Left and right lower panels
    Radio
    Negative battery cable
  2. Fill the cooling system.
  3. Recharge the A/C system, if equipped.
  4. Start the engine and check for leaks.
