How to remove Parking Brake shoes on Acura Integra?

The procedure is as follows :---

Parking Brake Shoes

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Some models covered by this guide use a parking drum brake to hold the vehicle. These shoes are attached to a backing plate behind the rear brake rotor. To service follow the steps below.
See Figure 1

  1. Loosen the rear parking brake by lowering it to the rest position.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support it with the proper jackstands.
  3. Remove the rear tires.
  4. Remove the two 6mm bolts.
  5. Remove the rear brake disc rotor.
You may need to install two 8mm bolts into the threaded holes in the rotor and tighten them. This will push the rotor from the hub and stud assembly.
See Figure 2

  1. Inspect the brake shoe linings for contamination, cracking, glazing, or excessive wear.
  2. Measure the linings of the shoes if there is any question as to the amount of life left. The lining thickness is 0.10 in (2.5mm) on a new shoe. The service limit is a minimum thickness of 0.04 in (1.0mm).
See Figure 3

The inner part of the rear rotor is machined in the same manner as a conventional brake drum. It too is prone to wear and warping. Although it is not as common to see a warped inner drum and rotor assembly it still can and does occur. Driving with the parking brake on can quickly generate enough heat to warp the inner drum assembly.
  1. The inner drum can be measured as shown in the illustration.
See Figure 4

Fig. Fig. 4: Measure the inside diameter of the drum
  1. The standard inside drum diameter should be 6.69 in (170.0mm). The minimum thickness is 6.73 in (171.0mm).
If the refinishing standard does not match the one on your drum use the maximum thickness number that is stamped on the rotor/drum as a reference. Replace the disc/drum if the specification is above the maximum specification. Also inspect the drum for sliding surface scoring, grooving or cracking.
  1. Push and turn the retainer springs to remove the tension pins.
  2. Remove the return springs.
  3. Remove the hub.
  4. Lower the parking brake assembly from the backing plate.
  5. Separate the parking brake cable and the brake lever.

  1. Remove the adjuster and springs.
  2. Remove the following components:

    Wave washer.
    Parking brake lever.
    Pivot pin.
    U-clip.
To install:
  1. Apply a suitable brake cylinder grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin.
  2. Insert the pivot pin into the brake shoe.
  3. Attach the parking brake lever and wave washer on the pivot pin.
  4. Secure these components with the U-clip.
Squeeze the U-clip securely to prevent it from coming out of the brake shoe.
See Figure 7

Fig. Fig. 7: Pinch the U-clip securely using a pair of pliers
  1. Apply a suitable anti-seize lubricant to all of the shoe sliding surfaces on the backing plate.

  1. Connect the rod spring as shown.

  1. Install the brake shoe.
  2. Shorten the clevises by turning the adjuster.
See Figure 10

  1. Connect the parking brake cable to the lever by sliding the cable through the eyelet.
  2. The tension spring, the retainer pin and the upper return springs must be installed next.
  3. Install the hub and torque the nut to the proper specifications.
See Figure 11

  1. Install the disc/drum assembly.
  2. Install the 6mm screws.
  3. Adjust the parking brake.
  4. Install the rear caliper.
  5. Install the wheel, then tighten the lug nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
Adjustment
After the installation of new shoes it is advised that you perform a lining surface break-in and adjustment.
See Figure 12
Click image to see an enlarged view
Fig. Fig. 12: Applying tension to the parking brake lever with a spring scale
  1. If equipped with a console mounted parking brake lever, have an assistant pull up on the parking brake lever with a force of 18.8 lbs. (9 kg) while you drive the vehicle at a speed of 30 mph (50 km/h) for a distance of no more than 1/4 (400m) miles.
  2. If equipped with a parking brake pedal, while keeping the parking brake release lever pulled up, depress the parking brake pedal with a force of 66 lbs. (30 kg) while you drive the vehicle at a speed of 30 mph (50 km/h) for a distance of no more than 1/4 (400m) miles.
  3. After the procedure is completed, allow the brakes to cool for at least ten minutes, then perform step 1 again.
  4. Allow the brakes to cool again, then check parking brake adjustment.
