How to replace water pump on Buick Lesabre and Park Avenue?


Water pump is important part/component for car cooling system.Water pump maintenance is required,to keep water pump free from problems.But in case if it gets faulty then it has to be replaced.

The procedure to replace cars water pump is as follows :----

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION


3.8L Engine



VIN 1 Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Support the engine using an engine support fixture.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Air conditioning compressor splash shield
    Supercharger and accessory drive belts
    Coil pack, if equipped
    Supercharger belt tensioner
    Front engine mount
    Power steering pump
    Engine mount bracket
    Idler pulley
    Water pump pulley
    Water pump
To install:
  1. Apply a thin bead of sealer around the outside edge of the water pump.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump with a new gasket. Torque the short bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and the long bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    Water pump pulley and torque the bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm)
    Engine mount bracket. Torque the nut closest to the a/c compressor to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm), and the others to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
    Idler pulley and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
    Power steering pump and torque the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)
    Front engine mount and torque the nuts to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm)
    Supercharger belt tensioner and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
    Ignition coil pack assembly, if equipped and torque the nuts to 70 in. lbs. (8 Nm)
    Supercharger drive belt
    Accessory drive belt
    Air conditioning compressor splash shield
    Negative battery cable
  3. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  4. Run the engine and check for leaks.
  5. Recheck the coolant level when the engine has cooled.
VIN K Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The long bolt can be removed by aligning the bolt head up with the hole in the frame rail.



    Negative battery cable
    Accessory drive belt
    Coolant hoses from the water pump
    Water pump pulley bolts

To install:
  1. Apply a thin bead of sealer around the outside edge of the water pump.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump with new gasket. Torque the water pump short bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and the long bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    Water pump pulley. Torque the bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
    Coolant hoses to the water pump
    Drive belt
    Supercharger belt, if equipped
  3. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  4. Run the engine and check for leaks.
  5. Recheck the coolant level when the engine has cooled.

4.6L Engine



  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the upper filler panel.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly
  4. Remove the secondary AIR injection control valve.
  5. Remove the oil level indicator tube nut.
  6. Remove the water pump belt shield fasteners. Remove the water pump belt shield.
  7. Remove the water pump drive belt.
  8. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat housing.
  9. Remove the water pump cover bolts.
  10. Remove the water pump cover.
  11. Disconnect the heater return hose.
  12. Position tool J 38816-A, or equivalent, to the water pump locking ears.
  13. Fasten the support plate to the water housing crossover, to ensure proper engagement of the tool to the water pump locking ears.
  14. Using tool J 38816-A, or equivalent, turn the pump clockwise in order to remove the pump from the housing.

  15. Remove the support plate from the water housing crossover.
  16. Remove the water pump from the vehicle.
  17. Remove the seal from the water crossover.
  18. Clean the sealing surfaces of the water housing crossover and the pump cover.
  19. Clean and inspect the water pump.
To install:
  1. Insert the seal into the recessed portion of the water crossover.
    NOTE
    The notched locking ear (1) must be in the 7 o'clock position.

  2. Index the water pumps locking ears with the tangs in the water crossover.
  3. Position tool J 38816-A, or equivalent, to the water pump locking ears.
  4. Fasten the support plate to the water housing crossover, to ensure proper engagement of the tool to the water pump locking ears.
  5. Turn tool J 38816-A, or equivalent, counterclockwise. Tighten the water pump to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  6. Remove the support plate from the water housing crossover.
  7. Connect the water pump cover to the heater return hose.
  8. Install the water pump cover to the water housing crossover.
  9. Install the water pump cover bolts. Tighten the water pump cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10. Connect the radiator outlet hose to the thermostat housing.
  11. Install the water pump drive belt.
  12. Place the water pump belt shield in position.
  13. Install the water pump belt shield fasteners. Tighten the water pump belt shield fasteners to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  14. Install the oil level indicator tube nut. Tighten the oil level indicator tube nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  15. Install the secondary AIR injection control valve.
  16. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  17. Install the upper filler panel.
  18. Fill the cooling system.
