How to Replace Water Pump on Buick Century And Regal?

Water pump is important part/component for car cooling system.Water pump maintenance is required,to keep water pump free from problems. But in case if it gets faulty then it has to be replaced.

If you need dis-assembly or replacement instructions for any other auto/car part, or you want to ask question related to your car/truck jeep problem then please leave the comment with your details, so I can provide you the required instructions and solutions.

The procedure to replace cars water pump is as follows :----

Water Pump

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

3.1L and 3.4L (VIN E) Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Partially drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  3. Remove the drive belt guard.
  4. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts before removing the drive belt. This should help keep the pulley from turning as the bolts are loosened.
  5. Remove the drive belt. Please see .
  6. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley.
  7. Remove the water pump bolts and separate the pump from the engine front cover.

  1. Clean all parts well. Use care when scraping gasket material from the front cover and the pump. Do not gouge aluminum parts. Clean the bolt threads well. The torque specification is low and if the bolt threads are dirty, an accurate torque is not possible and leaks are likely to develop.
  2. Using a new gasket, install the water pump to the front cover. Install the cleaned and lightly lubricated water pump bolts. Torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  3. Install the water pump pulley and bolts and torque to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process. When refilling the cooling system, use the proper mix of DEX-COOL® and water. Check for leaks.
3.4L (VIN X) Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Partially drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  3. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir.
  4. Remove the drive belt. Please see .
  5. Remove the pulley bolts and separate the pulley from the water pump.
  6. Remove the water pump bolts and remove the pump from the engine.

To install:
(10 Nm).
  3. Install the water pump pulley and bolts and finger-tighten the bolts.
  4. Install the drive belt, then torque the pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process. When refilling the cooling system, use the proper mix of DEX-COOL® and water. Check for leaks.
3.8L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the retainers on the underhood electrical center and reposition out of the way.
  3. Partially drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  4. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts before removing the drive belt. This should help keep the pulley from turning as the bolts are loosened.
  5. Remove the drive belt. Please see .
  6. Remove the power steering pumps and reposition the pump out of the way. Do not disconnect the fluid lines.
  7. Remove the water pump bolts and separate the pump from the engine. Note that bolt lengths vary. Use care to note the length of bolts as they are removed and the location from which they were removed so they can be returned to their proper locations.

To install:
  1. Clean all parts well. Use care when scraping gasket material from the front cover and the pump. Do not gouge aluminum parts. Clean the bolt threads well. These bolts are called 'torque to yield' which means they are tightened to a specific torque, then turned an additional number of degrees. GM recommends a torque angle meter be used for final bolt torque.
  2. Using a new gasket, install the water pump to the engine. Install the bolts, taking care to return the bolts to their original location. Tighten the long bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus an additional 40 degrees. Tighten the short bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) plus an additional 80 degrees.
  3. Install the water pump pulley finger-tight, but do not final tighten the bolts yet.
  4. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process. After the drive belt is in place, final tighten the pump pulley bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
  5. Refill the cooling system, using the proper mix of DEX-COOL® and water. Check for leaks.
3.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Partially drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts before removing the drive belt. This should help keep the pulley from turning as the bolts are loosened.
  4. Remove the drive belt. Please see .
  5. Remove the idler pulley bolt and remove the idler pulley.
  6. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley.
  7. Remove the water pump bolts and separate the pump from the engine. Note that bolt lengths vary. There are long and short bolts. Use care to note the length of bolts as they are removed and the location from which they were removed so they can be returned to their proper locations. Discard the gasket.

To install:
Install the cleaned and lightly lubricated water pump bolts finger-tight, then torque to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  3. Install the water pump pulley and bolts and finger-tighten the bolts.
  4. Install the idler pulley and bolt. Tighten the idler pulley bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  5. Install the drive belt, then, with the drive belt holding the pulley from turning, torque the water pump pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of the removal process. When refilling the cooling system, use the proper mix of DEX-COOL® and water. Check for leaks.
