How to Inspect Camshaft & Valve Lash Adjuster on Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner?

The procedure is similar for both Ford and Mercury car models:----

The details to inspect Camshaft & Valve Lash Adjuster is as follows:---

Inspection

Camshaft Inspection

Specific to:

Ford Escape 2008-2009

Mercury Mariner 2008-2009

1. Inspect camshaft lobes for pitting or damage in the contact area. Minor pitting is acceptable outside the contact area.

2. Use the dial indicator gauge with holding fixture to measure camshaft intake/exhaust lobe lift.
3. Rotate the camshaft and subtract the lowest indicator reading from the highest dial indicator gauge reading to figure the camshaft lobe lift.
   
   NOTE

   Camshaft journals must be within specifications before checking runout.

4. Using the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture, measure the camshaft runout.
5. Rotate the camshaft and subtract the lowest indicator reading from the highest dial Indicator gauge reading.

Hydraulic Valve Lash Inspection

Specific to:

Ford Escape 2008-2009

Mercury Mariner 2008-2009

1. Inspect the hydraulic lash adjuster and roller follower for damage. If any damage is found, inspect the camshaft lobes and valves for damage.
