How to test and replace Engine Oil Level Switch on Oldsmobile?

Engine Oil Level Switch
TESTING
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The engine oil level sensor is used on several different engines and they all work in a similar manner. It is a simple float switch that is grounded when the engine oil level is okay. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) checks the engine oil level switch circuit at start up. If the engine has been running, the PCM performs a test routine based on engine coolant temperature to ensure that the engine oil has drained back into the sump before checking the state of the engine oil level switch. If the engine coolant is between 59-284°F (15-140°C), the PCM compares the engine coolant temperature at the last key OFF to the engine coolant temperature at the current key ON . If the difference between the recorded temperature values is at least 54° (12°C), the PCM will test the engine oil level.

TESTING

"LOW OIL" Indicator ON, Oil Level OK
  1. Unplug the engine oil level sensor connector.
  2. Using a 3 Amp fused jumper, connect terminal A to terminal B.
  3. With the ignition switch ON , is the "LOW OIL" indicator now on-
  4. If yes, check the circuit from the oil sensor to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the circuit from the oil sensor to ground for an open. Another remote possibility is an open in the circuit from the PCM to the instrument panel.
  5. If no, replace the engine oil level sensor.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The engine oil level switch is mounted to the side or bottom of the oil pan, depending on the engine.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
  3. Unplug the electrical connector from the engine oil level switch.
  4. Unthread the switch from the oil pan.

To install:
  1. Install the oil level switch to the oil pan and tighten to 13-20 ft. lbs. (17-27 Nm).
  2. Plug in the electrical connector.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Add engine oil to the correct level.
This will help
Thanks.
