How to replace crankshaft Position sensor on Oldsmobile?

Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

7X Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor
3.1L & 3.4L (VIN E) ENGINES
The 7X CKP sensor is mounted to an opening in the side of the engine block where it can read off a special area of the crankshaft.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Crank the steering wheel fully to the left.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Locate the 7X CKP sensor on the side of the block just above the oil pan gasket rail on the block.
  5. Detach the electrical connector.
  6. Remove the retaining bolt and pull the sensor from the engine.

To install:
  1. Inspect the sensor for wear, cracks or leakage. Replace the O-ring as necessary.
  2. Lubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil before installing.
  3. Install the engine to the block and snug up the retainer bolt to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4. Connect the wiring harness and lower the vehicle.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
3.4L (VIN X) ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the intermediate exhaust pipe.
  4. Remove the rack and pinion heat shield.
  5. Detach the 7X crankshaft position sensor electrical connector
  6. Remove the sensor retainer bolt and separate the sensor from the engine block.

To install:
  1. It is important to lubricate the sensor O-ring with clean engine oil. Install the sensor and tighten the bolt to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm). Do not over-tighten.
  2. Install the remainder of the components in the reverse order of removal.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
24X Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor
3.1L AND 3.4L (VIN E & X) ENGINES
The 24X CKP sensor is secured in an aluminum mounting bracket and bolted to the front side of the engine timing cover, and is partially behind the crankshaft balancer.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt, as outlined in .
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the crankshaft balancer, as outlined in .
  5. Take note of the crankshaft position sensor harness routing before removal.
  6. Remove the harness retaining clip and detach the electrical connector.
  7. Remove the two retaining bolts and remove the sensor.

  1. Install the 24X CKP sensor with the two bolts and route the harness as noted during removal. Torque the bolt to 96 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Install the harness connector
  2. Install the crankshaft balancer. Use thread sealer GM #1052080 or equivalent on the balancer through bolt and torque to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm). Please see .
  3. Install the remainder of the components in the reverse order of removal.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
Dual Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensors
3.5L (VIN H) ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the starter motor, as outlined in .
  4. Detach the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector
  5. Remove the sensor retainer bolt and separate the sensor from the engine block. Remove by pulling on the sensor connector. Do not pry on the bracket. Do not rotate (twist) the sensor or damage the mounting bracket, if the sensor is to be reused.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal process, observing the following points.
    1. Make sure the sensor bore is completely free of any foreign material (old O-ring, dirt, burrs, etc.).
    2. Make sure that the flange of the sensor bore is not damaged.
    3. Clean all mounting surfaces before reinstalling any components.
    4. If the sensor is being reused, check for damage. Inspect the face of the sensor (bottom of the brass housing) for damage.
    5. Never install a sensor that has been dropped.
    6. Lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil.
  2. Install the crankshaft position sensor and fully seat into its bore. Install the retaining screw and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Do not over-tighten. Verify that the electrical connection is secure.
  3. Install the starter motor, as outlined in .
  4. The Crankshaft Position Sensor Learn Procedure must be performed after replacing the CKP sensor. Even if the original sensor is reinstalled, the Learn Procedure must be performed.
3.8L ENGINES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine belt(s) from the crankshaft pulley. Please see .
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front tire assembly. Remove the right inner fender access cover.
  5. A flywheel holding device such as GM's J 37096 is required to keep the crankshaft from turning as the crankshaft balancer is being removed. Install this holding tool or its equivalent. Please see for more information.
  6. Using a 28mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt. Using special tool J 38197 or equivalent balancer removal tools, drawn the balancer from the end of the crankshaft. Please see for more information.
  7. There is a roughly circular aluminum shield that protects the crankshaft position sensor; remove this shield. Use care not to damage it. Do not pry to remove.
  8. Detach the electrical connector from the crankshaft position sensor, remove the attaching bolts and separate the sensor from the engine block face.

To install:
  1. Clean all parts well. Position the crankshaft sensor to the block face and tighten the bolts to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  2. Install the crankshaft position sensor shield. Verify that the electrical connector is secure.
  3. Install the crankshaft balancer. Please see .
  4. Torque the crankshaft balancer center bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76 degrees.
  5. Install the inner fender access cover and the right front tire assembly. Wheel nut torque is 104 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Install the serpentine belt(s), as outlined in .
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

This will help.
Thanks.
