Adjustment
There is no adjustment for the front or rear wheel bearings due to the nature of their design. These bearings are permanently lubricated and require no periodic maintenance.
Wheel bearings can not be adjusted. The rear bearings must be replaced as a unit and never be reused once removed. The front wheel bearings are pressed into the hub and are not available separately. If a front wheel bearing is in need of replacement, it is replaces as a unit with the hub.

Removal & Installation
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:

To install:
NOTE
Use new nuts, bolts, and split pins.
NOTE
The knuckle must be clean enough to allow the wheel hub to be completely seated by hand. Do not press or draw the wheel hub into place.
- Install or connect the following:
Hub and bearing assembly and tighten the bolts to 61-78 ft. lbs. (83-107 Nm)Steering knuckle and tighten the pinch bolt to 72-97 ft. lbs. (98-132 Nm)Lower ball joint and tighten the nut to 50-67 ft. lbs. (68-92 Nm)Wheel speed sensorStabilizer bar link and tighten the nut to 57-75 ft. lbs. (77-103 Nm)Outer tie rod end and tighten the nut to 35-46 ft. lbs. (47-63 Nm)Brake caliper and rotor and tighten the caliper anchor bracket bolts to 65-87 ft. lbs. (88-118 Nm)Hub retainer nut and tighten to 170-202 ft. lbs. (230-275 Nm)Front wheel
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
CAUTIONDiscard the wheel hub retainer. It is a torque prevailing design and cannot be reused. If loosened, the retainer must be removed and a new one installed.
NOTEMake sure the steering wheel is in the unlocked position. - Remove the hub cap or wheel cover, the wheel hub retainer, and the washer. Discard the retainer.
- Remove the front brake rotor.
- Remove and discard the tie rod cotter pin and nut.
CAUTIONDo not damage the tie-rod end boot when installing the removal tool 211-001.
NOTERemove the adapter from the ball end of the removal tool. Apply a small amount of grease to the tie-rod end stud and the ball of the special tool.
- Remove and discard the tie rod cotter pin and nut.
- Using the removal tools illustrated, disconnect the tie-rod end.
- Remove the bolt and detach the ABS sensor, if equipped. Unclip the ABS sensor wire retainer and position the sensor out of the way.
- Remove and discard the strut to knuckle nut.
- Remove and discard the ball joint nut.
- Using the tools illustrated, disconnect the ball joint from the lower arm.
- Using a pry bar, push the lower arm down until the ball joint is free of the arm.
CAUTIONDo not allow the halfshaft to move outboard. Over-extension of the tripod CV joint can result in separation of internal parts, causing failure of the halfshaft.
NOTEHold the threaded rod while turning the nut. - Using the tools illustrated, press the halfshaft from the wheel bearing and hub. Wire the halfshaft in a level position.
- Remove the flag bolt and the steering knuckle.
CAUTIONThe wheel bearing and hub is not pressed into the knuckle. Do not use a slide hammer or strike the inner race of the bearing. Damage to the bearing can result.
NOTEIf necessary, lubricate the knuckle and bearing with a rust inhibitor. - Remove the bolts and the wheel hub and bearing. Discard the bolts.
CAUTIONThe knuckle bore must be clean enough to allow the wheel bearing and hub to seat completely by hand. Do not press or draw the wheel hub and bearing into place. - Clean and inspect the knuckle bearing bore. If the knuckle is cracked, install a new knuckle.
To install:
- Lubricate the knuckle bearing bore with anti-seize lubricant
- Install the wheel bearing and hub and tighten to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
- Position the knuckle on the strut and install the flag bolt.
- Using the tools used during removal, press the halfshaft into the wheel bearing and hub.
- Using a pry bar, push the lower arm down until the ball joint can be installed.
- Install a new nut and tighten to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
- Install a new strut to knuckle nut and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
- Install the ABS sensor wire retainer and sensor, if equipped.
NOTEMake sure the ABS sensor mounting hole does not have debris or corrosion build up, or false ABS activation can occur.
NOTEIf the hole in the tie-rod end does not line up with the slots in the nut, continue tightening the nut. Do not loosen the nut to align the slots in the nut with the hole in the outer tie-rod end. - Connect the tie-rod end to the knuckle and install a new nut and cotter pin. Tighten the nut to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
- Install the brake rotor.
CAUTIONThe front axle wheel hub retainer must be tightened to specification immediately during installation. If the retainer is not tightened immediately, the nylon lock will set incorrectly, leading to incorrect torque readings and bearing failure. Any front wheel hub retainer that is not immediately tightened to specification or is loosened must be removed and a new retainer installed. - Install the washer, the wheel hub retainer, tighten to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm). Install the hub cap or wheel cover.
NOTE
The wheel bearings are only removed if they are worn. They cannot be removed without destroying them (due to side thrust created by the bearing puller). They cannot be disassembled, repacked or adjusted.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Front wheelCaliper, then suspend the brake caliper to avoid putting stress on the brake lineSetscrew, with a suitable hex wrenchBrake disc, then the dust cover suing a suitable prytool or chisel to remove the pressed on cover - Using a suitable chisel, knock the tab on the collared nut away from the shaft. Remove and discard the nut.
The bearing with a puller set tool Nos. 31-2-101/102/104 or their equivalents and discard it. On M3 models, use a puller set tool No. 31-2-102/105/106 or their equivalents. On M3 models, install the main bracket of the puller with 3 wheel bolts. - If the inside bearing inner race remains on the stub axle, unbolt and remove the dust guard. Bend back the inner dust guard and pull the inner race off using tool No. 00-7-500 and 33-1-309 or their equivalents, which are capable of getting under the race to remove it. Reinstall the dust guard.
To install:
- If the dust guard has been removed, install a new one. Install tool No. 31-2-120; except the M3 models, which require tool No. 31-2-110. Place the tool over the stub axle and screw it in the entire length of the guide sleeve's threads, then press the bearing on.
- Reverse the remaining removal procedures to install the disc and caliper. Using a new collared mounting nut, tighten the wheel hub collar nut to 210 ft. lbs. (290 Nm). Lock the collar nut by bending over the tab into the groove of the spindle.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
