The instructions are similar for 2006 and 2007 ford Taurus Car models.
The details to replace Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear are as follows :----
Removal & Installation
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Turn the steering wheel 1/4 turn to the right and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
- Loosen the tie-rod end jam nuts.
- Remove and discard the cotter pins and nuts.
CAUTIONDo not damage the tie rod end boot when installing the special tool. - Disconnect the tie-rod ends.
NOTENote the number of times the tie-rod ends turn for assembly reference. - Remove the tie-rod ends.
- Position the boot out of the way.
- Remove the bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft coupling. Discard the bolt.
- Remove and discard the subframe nuts as shown.
- Support the rear of the front subframe with jack stands.
- Remove and discard the bolts. Lower the rear of the front subframe approximately 4 inches (102 mm).
- On vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 4V (VIN S) engine, remove the bolts and the bracket with the heat shield attached.
- On vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 2V MFI engine, remove the bolt and detach the bracket from the steering gear.
- Loosen the fittings and disconnect the hoses. Discard the seals.
- Remove the steering gear out of the left fender well.
- Using the tool 211-D027, install new seals on the power steering hose fittings.
To install:
- Install the steering gear.
- Connect the hoses and tighten the fittings to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm) .
- On vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 2V MFI engine, attach the bracket to the steering gear. Tighten the bolt to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
- On vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 4V (VIN S) engine, install the bracket with the heat shield attached.
- Guide the steering column intermediate shaft coupling on the steering gear input shaft as the subframe is raised into position.
- Raise the rear of the front subframe approximately 4 inches (102 mm). Tighten the bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
- Remove the jack stands.
- Install new subframe nuts as shown in the earlier illustration and tighten the bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
- Center, and then turn the steering gear input shaft 1/4 turn to the right to make sure the intermediate shaft coupling will fit correctly on the input shaft.
- Connect the intermediate shaft coupling. Install a new bolt and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
- Install the boot.
- Install the tie-rod ends and tighten the same number of turns as noted during removal.
- Connect the tie rod ends and using new nuts, tighten to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
- Tighten the jam nuts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
- Install both front wheel and tire assemblies.
- Fill and leak check the system.
- Check and adjust front alignment as necessary.
