How to Replace Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear On 2007 Ford Taurus?

The instructions are similar for 2006 and 2007 ford Taurus Car models.

The details to replace Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear are as follows :----

Removal & Installation

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
2. Turn the steering wheel 1/4 turn to the right and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
3. Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
4. Loosen the tie-rod end jam nuts.
5. Remove and discard the cotter pins and nuts.
   
   CAUTION

   Do not damage the tie rod end boot when installing the special tool.
6. Disconnect the tie-rod ends.
   
   NOTE

   Note the number of times the tie-rod ends turn for assembly reference.
7. Remove the tie-rod ends.
8. Position the boot out of the way.
9. Remove the bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft coupling. Discard the bolt.
10. Remove and discard the subframe nuts as shown.

11. Support the rear of the front subframe with jack stands.
12. Remove and discard the bolts. Lower the rear of the front subframe approximately 4 inches (102 mm).
13. On vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 4V (VIN S) engine, remove the bolts and the bracket with the heat shield attached.
14. On vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 2V MFI engine, remove the bolt and detach the bracket from the steering gear.
15. Loosen the fittings and disconnect the hoses. Discard the seals.
16. Remove the steering gear out of the left fender well.
17. Using the tool 211-D027, install new seals on the power steering hose fittings.

To install:

1. Install the steering gear.
2. Connect the hoses and tighten the fittings to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm) .
3. On vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 2V MFI engine, attach the bracket to the steering gear. Tighten the bolt to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
4. On vehicles equipped with a 3.0L 4V (VIN S) engine, install the bracket with the heat shield attached.
5. Guide the steering column intermediate shaft coupling on the steering gear input shaft as the subframe is raised into position.
6. Raise the rear of the front subframe approximately 4 inches (102 mm). Tighten the bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
7. Remove the jack stands.
8. Install new subframe nuts as shown in the earlier illustration and tighten the bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
9. Center, and then turn the steering gear input shaft 1/4 turn to the right to make sure the intermediate shaft coupling will fit correctly on the input shaft.
10. Connect the intermediate shaft coupling. Install a new bolt and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
11. Install the boot.
12. Install the tie-rod ends and tighten the same number of turns as noted during removal.
13. Connect the tie rod ends and using new nuts, tighten to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
14. Tighten the jam nuts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
15. Install both front wheel and tire assemblies.
16. Fill and leak check the system.
17. Check and adjust front alignment as necessary.
