REMOVAL & INSTALLATION details are mentioned below:---
3.0L (VIN S) Engine
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
- Remove the engine from the vehicle and mount it on an engine stand.
NOTE
The crankshaft accessory drive pulley shaft has left-hand threads. Rotate the pulley shaft clockwise to remove.
NOTE
Keep the lash adjusters in order for installation.

- Remove the cylinder head bolts from the cylinder heads in sequence and remove the cylinder heads.
To install:
NOTE
The cylinder head bolts are a torque-to-yield design and cannot be reused.
NOTE
Left and right cylinder head gaskets are not interchangeable.
- Install new gaskets and install the cylinder heads. Use new bolts and tighten as follows:
- Step 1: Tighten the bolts in sequence to 28-31 ft. lbs. (37-43 Nm).
- Step 2: Plus 85-95 degrees.
- Step 3: Loosen the bolts in reverse sequence 1 full turn.
- Step 4: Tighten the bolts in sequence to 28-31 ft. lbs. (37-43 Nm).
- Step 5: Tighten the bolts in sequence 85-95 degrees.
- Step 6: Tighten the bolts in sequence 85-95 degrees.
- Install or connect the following:
Valve lash adjusters in their original locations
Camshafts
Timing chains
Front cover
Oil pan
Crankshaft pulley
Water pump
A/C compressor and bracket
Power steering pump
Heater hose bypass tube
Crankcase ventilation tube
Accessory drive belt
Radiator hose tube and bracket
Valve covers
Exhaust manifolds
Lower intake manifold
Upper intake manifold
Engine assembly into the vehicle.
- Run the engine and check for leaks.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Release the fuel system pressure.
- Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
- Remove the water pump bypass tube.
- Remove the exhaust manifold-to-pipe nuts.
- Remove the water pump.
- Remove the lower intake manifold.
- Remove the camshafts.
- Install and engine support tool and lower the engine until it is aligned with the A/C compressor bracket, and finger-tighten the four bolts.
- Remove the engine support tool.
- Remove the camshaft followers.
- Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.
- Remove the nuts and remove the exhaust manifold and discard the gasket.
- Remove the dipstick tube.
- Inspect and, if necessary, install a new O-ring seal.
- Remove the left hand cylinder block drain plug.
NOTENew cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are torque-to-yield designed and cannot be reused. - Remove the bolts in the sequence shown and remove the cylinder head.
- Discard the gasket and the bolts.
To install:
- Position the cylinder head, gasket and install the bolts in the sequence shown in six steps:
- Step 1: Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
- Step 2: Tighten bolts 90 degrees.
- Step 3: Loosen one full turn.
- Step 4: Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
- Step 5: Tighten 90 degrees.
- Step 6: Tighten 90 degrees.
- Install the cylinder block drain plug and tighten to 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
NOTELubricate the oil dipstick tube O-ring with clean engine oil. - Install the oil dipstick tube and the nut.
- Position a new gasket and install the exhaust manifold nuts.
- Install the hydraulic lash adjusters. Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters with clean engine oil prior to installation.
- Install the camshaft followers. Lubricate the camshaft followers with clean engine oil prior to installation
- Install the engine support tool.
- Remove the four A/C compressor bracket bolts.
- Using the engine support tool, raise the engine away from the A/C compressor bracket.
- Install the camshafts.
- Install the lower intake manifold.
- Install the water pump.
- Install the exhaust manifold-to-pipe nuts.
- Install the water pump bypass tube.
- Run the engine and check for leaks.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Remove the engine from the vehicle and mount it on an engine stand.
- Remove or disconnect the following:

Engine assembly into the vehicle.
- Run the engine and check for leaks.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Release the fuel system pressure.
- Remove the water pump bypass tube.
- Remove the rear support brace.
- Remove the lower intake manifold.
- Remove the camshafts.
- Install and engine support tool and lower the engine until it is aligned with the A/C compressor bracket, and finger-tighten the four bolts.
- Remove the engine support tool.
- Remove the exhaust manifold-to-pipe bolts.
- Disconnect the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) tube from the exhaust manifold.
- Remove the bolt and the ground wire.
- Remove the camshaft followers.
- Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.
- Remove the nuts and remove the exhaust manifold and discard the gasket.
- Remove the right hand cylinder block drain plug.
NOTENew cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are torque-to-yield designed and cannot be reused. - Remove the bolts in the sequence shown and remove the cylinder head.
- Discard the gasket and the bolts.
To install:
- Position the cylinder head, gasket and install the bolts in the sequence shown in six steps: Tighten the bolts in six Steps.
- Step 1: Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
- Step 2: Tighten bolts 90 degrees.
- Step 3: Loosen one full turn.
- Step 4: Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
- Step 5: Tighten 90 degrees.
- Step 6: Tighten 90 degrees.
- Install the cylinder block drain plug and tighten to 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
- Position a new gasket and install the exhaust manifold nuts.
- Install the hydraulic lash adjusters. Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters with clean engine oil prior to installation.
- Install the camshaft followers. Lubricate the camshaft followers with clean engine oil prior to installation
- Install the ground wire and bolt.
- Connect the EGR tube to the exhaust manifold. Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
- Install the exhaust manifold-to-pipe bolts. Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
- Install the engine support tool.
- Remove the four A/C compressor bracket bolts.
- Using the engine support tool, raise the engine away from the A/C compressor bracket.
- Install the camshafts.
- Install the lower intake manifold.
- Install the rear support brace. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
- Install the water pump bypass tube.
- Run the engine and check for leaks.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Drain the cooling system.
- Set the No. 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Negative battery cable
Air cleaner outlet hose
Vacuum hoses from the intake manifold
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve
EGR transducer
EGR vacuum regulator solenoid
Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector
Throttle Position (TP) sensor connector
Intake Air Control (IAC) valve connector
Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and housing
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
Accelerator cable
Cruise control cable
Fuel lines
Upper intake manifold
Fuel injector wiring harness
Coolant hoses
Ignition coil and bracket
Spark plug wires
Accessory drive belt and tensioner
Alternator
Power steering pump
Oil dipstick tube

The cylinder head bolts are a torque-to-yield design and cannot be reused.
- Install the cylinder heads with new gaskets.
- Tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:
- Step 1: 36-39 ft. lbs. (47-53 Nm).
- Step 2: Loosen the bolts 1 complete turn.
- Step 3: Tighten the bolts to 20-24 ft. lbs. (27-33 Nm).
- Step 4: Tighten the bolts 85-95 degrees.
- Step 5: Tighten the bolts 85-95 degrees.
- Install or connect the following:

Spark plugs
Lower intake manifold
Rocker arms and pushrods in their original locations. Tighten the rocker arm bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm). Tighten each rocker arm bolt with the valve closed and the lifter on the camshaft lobe base circle. Rotate the crankshaft as necessary.

Heater supply tube brackets
Oil dipstick tube and tighten the nut to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
Power steering pump
Alternator
Accessory drive belt and tensioner
Spark plug wires
Ignition coil and bracket. Tighten the fasteners to 30-39 ft. lbs. (40-55 Nm).

- Step 4: Tighten the bolts to 63-73 ft. lbs. (85-99 Nm).
- On 1999-02 models, tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:
- Step 1: 36-39 ft. lbs. (47-53 Nm).
- Step 2: Loosen the bolts 1 complete turn.
- Step 3: Tighten the bolts to 20-24 ft. lbs. (27-33 Nm).
- Step 4: Tighten the bolts 85-95 degrees.
- Step 5: Tighten the bolts 85-95 degrees.
- Install or connect the following:
Exhaust manifolds
Spark plugs
Lower intake manifold
Rocker arms and pushrods in their original locations. Tighten the rocker arm bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm). Tighten each rocker arm bolt with the valve closed and the lifter on the camshaft lobe base circle. Rotate the crankshaft as necessary.

- Fill the cooling system and check for leaks.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Remove the lower intake manifold.
- Remove the accessory drive belt.
- Remove the retainers and the engine anti-roll strut brace.
- Disconnect the alternator electrical connections.
- Remove the retainers and the alternator.
- Remove the bolt and the drive belt idler pulley.
- Remove the bolt and the drive belt tensioner pulley.
- Remove the spark plug wires.
- Remove the exhaust manifold.
- Remove the power steering pump and bracket assembly as follows:.
- Disconnect the power steering return hose.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the two nuts.
- Remove the eight cylinder head bolts.
- Remove the cylinder heads.
- Remove and discard the head gasket.
To install:
- Using metal surface cleaner, clean the cylinder head sealing surfaces.
NOTEThe "V" notch in the cylinder head gasket faces the front of the engine. - Install a new cylinder head gasket.
- Install the cylinder head.
- Install the bolts. Tighten the bolts in five steps in the sequence shown.
- Step 1: Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Step 2: Loosen the bolts one full turn.
- Step 3: Tighten to 22 ft. lbs (30 Nm).
- Step 4: Rotate each bolt 90 degrees.
- Step 5: Rotate each bolt an additional 90 degrees. Install the bolts. Tighten the bolts in five stages in the sequence shown. Stage 1: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft). Stage 2: Loosen the bolts one full turn. Stage 3: Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). Stage 4: Rotate an additional 90 degrees. Stage 5: Rotate an additional 90 degrees.
- Install the power steering pump and bracket assembly as follows:
- Install the bolt and the two nuts. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
- Connect the power steering return hose.
- Install the exhaust manifold.
- Install the spark plug wires.
- Install the drive belt tensioner and bolt. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
- Install the drive belt idler pulley and bolt. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
- Install the alternator and the retainers.
- Connect the alternator electrical connections.
- Install the engine anti-roll strut brace and the retainers. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
- Install the accessory drive belt.
- Install the lower intake manifold.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Remove the lower intake manifold.
- Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector.
- Disconnect the Heated Oxygen (HO 2 S) sensor connector.
- Remove the nut and disconnect the wiring harness ground connections.
- Loosen the bolt and disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) electrical connector.
- Disconnect the Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve electrical connector.
- Disconnect the spark plug wires and position the wires aside.
- Loosen the nut and disconnect the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) tube.
- Remove the three bolts and the exhaust manifold heat shield.
- Loosen the exhaust manifold-to-catalytic converter bolts.
- Remove the six exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head bolts.
- Disconnect the engine wire harness locator.
- Remove the bolt and separate the catalytic converter heat shield from the cylinder head.
- Remove the eight cylinder head bolts.
- Remove the cylinder head.
- Remove and discard the head gasket.
To install:
- Using metal surface cleaner, clean the cylinder head sealing surfaces.
NOTEThe "V" notch in the cylinder head gasket faces the front of the engine. - Install a new cylinder head gasket.
- Install the cylinder head.
- Install the bolts. Tighten the bolts in five steps in the sequence shown.
- Install the catalytic converter heat shield and wire harness ground connection.
- Position the wiring harness and install the harness locator.
- Install the exhaust manifold.
- Tighten the exhaust manifold-to-catalytic converter bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
- Install the exhaust manifold heat shield.
- Install the EGR tube and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Connect the spark plug wires.
- Connect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector.
- Connect the PCM electrical connector.
- Connect the wire harness ground connections.
- Connect the HO 2 S sensor electrical connector.
- Connect the CKP electrical connector.
- Install the lower intake manifold.
- Install new gaskets and install the cylinder heads. Use new bolts and tighten in sequence as follows:
- Step 1: 20-23 ft. lbs. (27-32 Nm).
- Step 2: Plus 85-95 degrees.
- Install or connect the following:
Camshafts
Timing chain
CKP pulse ring
Front cover
Accessory belt idler pulleys
Oil pan
CKP sensor
CMP sensor
Crankshaft pulley
Power steering pump
Spark plugs
Left and right valve covers
Water pump
Water crossover pipe
Lower intake manifold
IMRC cable and bracket
Exhaust manifolds
Secondary air injection valve, tubes, and brackets
Engine control sensor wiring harness and brackets
