Camshaft, Bearings & Lifters
INSPECTION
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
The details are as follows :---------
Inspection
Bearings & Journals
Check the camshaft bores for size, taper, roundness, alignment and finish. If any of these exceed the specifications given in the engine rebuilding chart at the end of this section, install new bearings or cylinder heads.
CamshaftDegrease the camshaft using safe solvent, clean all oil grooves. Visually inspect the cam lobes and bearing journals for excessive wear. If a lobe is questionable, check all lobes and journals with a micrometer.
Measure the lobes from nose to base and again at 90°. The lift is determined by subtracting the second measurement from the first. If all exhaust lobes and all intake lobes are not identical, the camshaft must be reground or replaced. Measure the bearing journals and compare to the specifications. If a journal is worn there is a good chance that the cam bearings are worn too, requiring replacement.
If the lobes and journals appear intact, place the front and rear camshaft journals in V-blocks and rest a dial indicator on the center journal. Rotate the camshaft to check for run-out, if deviation exceeds specification, replace the camshaft.
Measure the camshaft journal diameter at the points shown in the accompanying illustration. If the If the diameters do not conform to specifications, replace the camshaft.
Lifters
- Thoroughly clean the lifter and its bore, then check for pitting, scoring or excessive wear.
- On flat lifters, the bottom should be flat and not concave.
- If equipped with a roller, the roller should rotate freely without excessive play.
Removal & Installation
3.0L (VIN U, 2) Engines
NOTE
If the rocker arms, pushrods or lifters are to be reused, they must be installed in the same positions they were removed from.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Remove the engine from the vehicle and mount it on an engine stand.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Valve coversRocker arms and pushrodsAccessory drive belt and tensionerAlternator and bracketsIntake manifoldValve lifter guide plateValve liftersCrankshaft damperOil panFront coverTiming chain and gearsCamshaft thrust plateCamshaft
To install:
NOTE
If replacing the camshaft, the valve lifters must also be replaced.
- Install or connect the following:
CamshaftCamshaft thrust plate and tighten the bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm)Timing chain and gears. Align the timing marks on the sprockets.Front coverOil panCrankshaft damperValve liftersValve lifter guide plateIntake manifoldAlternator and bracketsAccessory drive belt and tensionerRocker arms and pushrodsValve covers - Install the engine assembly into the vehicle.
- Start the engine and check for leaks and proper engine operation.
Left Side
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Remove the timing drive components.
- Remove the water pump belt.
CAUTIONThe OEM pulley is pressed on 0.18 inch (4.74 mm) past flush of the camshaft. The service pulley gets pressed on flush to the end of the camshaft. - Using the tools illustrated, remove the water pump drive pulley and discard.
CAUTIONIn order to make sure of correct sealing, do not scratch the camshaft.
- Using the tool illustrated, remove the camshaft oil seal and discard.
- Remove the intake camshaft oil seal retainer and discard the press-in-place gasket.
CAUTIONRecord the camshaft bearing cap locations. The camshaft bearing caps are positional and must be installed in their original locations and orientations or engine damage can occur. - Loosen the bolts for the left camshaft thrust caps.
- Loosen the left camshaft cap bolts in sequence to allow the camshafts to rise from the cylinder head and remove the caps.
- Remove the camshafts.
To install:
NOTE
Be sure the camshaft bearing caps are installed in their original positions.
- Lubricate camshafts with engine oil and carefully position the camshafts into the cylinder head.
- Align the camshafts as illustrated
CAUTIONDo not install the camshaft journal thrust caps until all of the camshaft bearing caps have been installed, or damage to the thrust caps can occur.
- Lubricate the bearing surfaces of the camshaft bearing caps with engine oil. Install the bearing caps and loosely install the bolts.
- Lubricate the bearing surfaces of the camshaft bearing thrust caps with engine oil. Install the bearing thrust caps and loosely install the bolts.
CAUTIONThe camshaft bearing caps are positional and must be installed in their original locations and orientations or engine damage can occur. - Verify that the camshaft bearing caps are in the correct locations.
- Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown.
NOTEClean and degrease the sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner.
- Install a new press-in-place gasket and install the camshaft oil seal retainer. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Lubricate the camshaft oil seal with engine oil.
- Install the new camshaft oil seal.
- Using the tools illustrated positioned over the oil seal, turn to install the seal.
CAUTIONThe OEM pulley is pressed on 0.18 inch (4.74 mm) past flush of the end of the camshaft. The service pulley gets pressed on flush to the end of the camshaft.
- Using the tool illustrated, install the water pump drive pulley.
- Install the water pump belt.
- Install the timing drive components.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
- Remove the timing drive components.
CAUTIONRecord the camshaft bearing cap location. The camshaft bearing caps are positional and must be installed in their original locations and orientations or engine damage can occur. - Loosen the right hand camshaft thrust cap bolts.
- Loosen the right hand camshaft cap bolts in sequence to allow the camshafts to rise from the cylinder head and remove the caps.
- Tighten the right camshaft bolts in the sequence shown to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Install the timing drive components
This will help.
Thanks.
