Brake Pads
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Front
See Figures 1 through 5
CAUTION
Older brake pads or shoes may contain asbestos, which has been determined to be cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surface with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surface! When cleaning brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid.
- Use a siphon or clean turkey baster to remove about half of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
- Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
- If necessary, remove the brake hose mounting bolts from the steering knuckle.
Regardless of their wear pattern, when brake pads are replaced on one side of the vehicle, they must also be replaced on the other side. It is advisable, however, to complete one side before beginning the other.
- Remove the caliper bolt and pivot it up and out of the way.
- Remove the pads and shims.
- If the pad thickness is less than the service requirement, replace them.
- Clean and check the brake rotor for cracks.
WARNING
When reusing the old brake pads, be sure to install them in the same positions to prevent an increase in stopping distance.
- Using an old pad as a cushion, push the piston into the caliper to allow enough space for the new pads. Or, you can use a large C-clamp, or other suitable tool, to completely retract the piston into the caliper.
- Install the pad shims and the pads.
- Apply molykote M77®or equivalent grease to both sides of the shims and the back of the pads. Do not put any on the friction material.
See Figure 6
The pad wear indicator goes on the inside.
- Pivot the caliper back over the pads. Be careful not to crush the boot when pivoting the down.
- Lubricate the caliper mounting bolts.
See Figures 7 and 8
- Install all the mounting bolts.
- Depress and hold the break several times to ensure they work.
- Carefully road test the vehicle.
- Use a siphon or clean turkey baster to remove about half of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
- Raise and properly support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies.
- Remove the brake hose bracket from the rear trailing arm.
- Remove the caliper shield.
- Unfasten the caliper mounting bolts, then remove the caliper from the bracket.
- Remove the pad shims.
- Remove the brake pads. If the brake pads are worn below specifications, replace the pads.
- Use a commercially available locknut wrench, or equivalent tool, to turn the caliper piston clockwise into position in the cylinder, then align the cutout in the piston with the tab on the inner pad by turning the piston back.
- Clean and remove any rust from the mounting bracket and caliper assembly.
- Clean the brake disc and check for cracks.
- Apply Molykote M77®or equivalent grease to the back of the brake pads and shims.
Do not apply to the friction material.
- Install the brake pads and shims into the caliper bracket.
- Install the brake caliper, then install and tighten the caliper mounting bolts.
- Install the caliper shield.
- Depress the brake pedal several times to build the pedal back up, then road test the vehicle.
