How to Replace Crankshaft Front Seal on Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner?


The procedure is similar for both Ford and Mercury car models:----

The details to replace Crankshaft Front Seal is as follows:---

Removal & Installation



2.3L Engine
Specific to:
Ford Escape 2008
Mercury Mariner 2008

WARNING
Do not loosen or remove the crankshaft pulley bolt without first installing the special tools as instructed in this procedure. The crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft timing sprocket are not keyed to the crankshaft. The crankshaft, the crankshaft sprocket and the pulley are fitted together by friction, using diamond washers between the flange faces on each part. For that reason, the crankshaft sprocket is also unfastened if you loosen the pulley bolt. Before any repair requiring loosening or removal of the crankshaft pulley bolt, the crankshaft and camshafts must be locked in place by the special service tools, otherwise severe engine damage can occur.


WARNING
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Crankshaft Damper Removal & Installation in this section.
  3. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft front oil seal. Use care not to damage the engine front cover or the crankshaft when removing the seal.

To install:

NOTE
Lubricate the oil seal with clean engine oil.

  1. Remove the through-bolt from the special tool.
  2. Using the special tool, install the crankshaft front oil seal.

  3. Install the crankshaft pulley.
2.3L Engines
Specific to:
Ford Escape 2006-2008
Mercury Mariner 2006-2008
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    WARNING
    During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.  


    WARNING
    The crankshaft, the crankshaft sprocket and the pulley are fitted together by friction, using diamond washers between the flange faces on each part. For that reason, the crankshaft sprocket is also unfastened if you loosen the pulley. Therefore, the engine must be retimed each time the damper is removed. Otherwise severe engine damage can occur.
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4. Remove the valve cover.
    WARNING
    Failure to position the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC) can result in damage to the engine. Turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation only.
  5. Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC).
    WARNING
    The special tool 303-465 is for camshaft alignment only. Using this tool to prevent engine rotation can result in engine damage.


    NOTE
    The camshaft timing slots are offset. If the special tool cannot be installed, rotate the crankshaft one complete revolution clockwise to correctly position the camshafts.

  6. Install the special tool in the slots on the rear of both camshafts.
    NOTE
    Installing the special tool in this step will prevent the engine from being rotated in the clockwise direction.
  7. Install special tool 303-507.
  8. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.

  9. Remove the engine plug bolt.
  10. Install the crankshaft holding tools.
    WARNING
    Failure to hold the crankshaft pulley in place while loosening the bolt can result in damage to the engine.

  11. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
    WARNING
    Use care not to damage the engine front cover or the crankshaft when removing the seal.

  12. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft front oil seal.
    NOTE
    Remove the through-bolt from the special tool.
To install:

NOTE
Lubricate the oil seal with clean engine oil.

  1. Using the a seal driver, install the crankshaft front oil seal.
    NOTE
    Do not reuse the crankshaft damper bolt.


    NOTE
    Apply clean engine oil on the seal area before installing.
  2. Install the crankshaft pulley and hand-tighten the bolt.
    WARNING
    Only hand-tighten the bolt or damage to the front cover can occur.


    NOTE
    This step will correctly align the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft.
  3. Install a standard 6 mm x 18 mm bolt through the crankshaft pulley and thread it into the front cover. Rotate the pulley as necessary to align the bolt holes.
    WARNING
    Failure to hold the crankshaft pulley in place while tightening the bolt can cause damage to the engine front cover.
  4. Using the special tools to hold the crankshaft pulley in place, tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt in two stages:
    1. Stage 1: Tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    2. Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees ( 1 / 4 turn).
  5. Remove the 6 mm x 18 mm bolt.
  6. Remove the special tools.
    NOTE
    Only turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation.
  7. Turn the engine two complete revolutions.
  8. Turn the crankshaft until the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
  9. Install special tool 303-507.
    WARNING
    Only hand-tighten the bolt or damage to the front cover can occur.
  10. Using the 6 mm x 18 mm bolt, check the position of the crankshaft pulley. If it is not possible to install the bolt, correct the engine timing.
  11. Using special tool 303-465, check the position of the camshafts. If it is not possible to install the special tool, correct the engine timing.
  12. Remove the 6 mm x 18 mm bolt.
  13. Install the engine plug bolt.
2.5L Engine
Specific to:
Ford Escape 2009
Mercury Mariner 2009

WARNING

Mercury Mariner 2008-2009
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  3. Remove the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Crankshaft Damper Removal & Installation in this section.
  4. Using the seal remover tool, remove and discard the crankshaft front seal.

To install:
  1. Clean all sealing surfaces with metal surface prep.
  2. Apply clean engine oil to the seal lip and seal bore before installing the seal.
  3. Using the seal installation tools, install a new crankshaft front seal.

  4. Install the crankshaft pulley.
3.0L Engines
Specific to:
Ford Escape 2006-2008
Mercury Mariner 2006-2008
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Crankshaft pulley
    Front oil seal
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    New front crankshaft oil seal
    Crankshaft pulley. See the Torque Specifications Chart for the tightening torques.
    Negative battery cable
  2. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
