How to replace Automatic Transaxle Assembly on Acura Car models?

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



The radio may have a coded theft protection circuit. Make sure you have the code before disconnecting the battery, removing the radio fuse, or removing the radio.
Integra
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner housing assembly with intake air tube.

  1. Disconnect the starter cables and remove the cable holder from the starter.

  1. Disconnect the transaxle ground cable from the transaxle hanger.

  1. Disconnect the lockup control solenoid valve connector and the shift control solenoid valve connector. Remove the harness clamp on the lockup control solenoid harness from the harness stay.
  2. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), main shaft speed sensor and the counter shaft speed sensor connectors.

  1. Remove the upper transaxle mounting bolts.

  1. Remove the drain plug from the transaxle, then drain the used fluid into a sealable container. Properly dispose of the used fluid. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer.

  1. Remove the splash shield.

  1. Remove the front wheels.
  2. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts from the front lower ball joints. Separate the ball joints from the lower control arms.
  3. Remove the right strut fork bolt, discard the nut.
  4. Remove the right strut pinch bolt, then remove the strut fork.
  5. Pry the right halfshaft out of the differential, discard the set ring on the inner joint.
  6. Pry the left halfshaft out of the intermediate shaft, discard the set ring on the inner joint.
  7. Tie plastic bags over the halfshaft joints to keep the splines of the joints clean.
  8. Detach the heated Oxygen (O 2 S) sensor connector.

  1. Unfasten the nuts and bolts connecting exhaust pipe "A" to the catalytic converter. Discard the gasket and the locknuts.
  2. Remove and discard the nuts attaching exhaust pipe "A" to the exhaust hanger.
  3. Unfasten and discard the locknuts attaching exhaust pipe "A" to the exhaust manifold, then remove exhaust pipe "A" from the vehicle. discard the exhaust gaskets.
  4. Remove the intermediate shaft mounting bolts, and remove the intermediate shaft.
  5. Remove the set ring from the intermediate shaft and install a new set ring.
  6. Remove the shift cable cover, then remove the shift cable by removing the control lever. Discard the lockwasher.

WARNING
Do not bend the shift control cable when removing it.

  1. Remove the right front mount/bracket and discard the two long attaching bolts.
  2. Detach the end of the throttle control cable from the throttle control drum.

  1. Disconnect the transaxle cooler hoses from the joint pipes. Turn the ends of the cooler hoses up to prevent fluid from flowing out, then plug the joint pipes.
  2. Remove the engine stiffener and the torque converter cover.

  1. Remove the eight drive plate bolts, one at a time, while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
  2. Place a suitable transaxle jack under the transaxle, then raise the transaxle just enough to take the weight off of the mounts, then remove the transaxle mount.
  3. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts and rear engine mounting bolts.

  1. Pull the transaxle away from the engine until it clears the 14mm dowel pins, then lower it on the transaxle jack.

  1. Remove the starter from the transaxle.

To install:
  1. Flush the ATF cooler.
  2. Install the starter to the transaxle, tighten the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Install the 14mm dowel pins to the torque converter housing.
  3. Place the transaxle on a transaxle jack, and raise to engine level.
  4. Fit the transaxle to the engine, then install the transaxle housing mounting bolts and the two rear engine mounting bolts with new washers. Tighten the transaxle housing mounting bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) and the rear engine mounting bolts to 86.8 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
  5. Install the transaxle mount. Tighten the bolt to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm) and the nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  6. Install the three transaxle upper mounting bolts, tighten the bolts to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
  7. Remove the transaxle jack.
  8. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate with the eight retaining bolts, then tighten the bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Rotate the crankshaft as necessary to tighten the bolts to 1 / 2 the specified torque, then the final torque, in a criss-cross pattern. After tightening the last bolts, check that the crankshaft rotates freely.
  9. Install the torque converter cover, tighten the three 6x1mm bolts, to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and tighten the 10x1.25 bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  10. Install the engine stiffener. Tighten the bolt attaching the engine stiffener to the transaxle to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). Tighten the bolts attaching the stiffener to the engine to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  11. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 130 ft. lbs. (177 Nm).
  12. Attach the transaxle cooler inlet hose to the joint pipe. Leave the drain hose on the return line.
  13. Connect the throttle control cable to the control drum and install the right front mount/bracket. Tighten the two new bolts (12x1.25mm) to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Tighten the two 10x1.25 bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  14. Connect the control lever and shifter cable, using a new lockwasher, then install the shift cable cover. Tighten the control lever bolt to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm), and the shift cable cover bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  15. Install new set ring to the intermediate shaft and the halfshafts.
  16. Install the intermediate shaft, tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  17. The remaining components are installed in the reverse order from which they were removed.
  18. Refill the transaxle to the proper level.
  19. Start the engine, with the parking brake set, and shift the transaxle through all gears three times.
  20. Check and adjust the shift cable as necessary.
  21. Let the engine reach operating temperature (the cooling fan comes on) with the transaxle in P or N , then turn the engine off and check the fluid level.
  22. Road test the vehicle.
  23. Enter the radio security code.
2.2CL and 2.3CL
  1. Disconnect the negative, then the positive battery cables.
  2. Remove the set plate, then remove the battery from the vehicle.
  3. Shift the transaxle into N .
  4. Remove the air intake hose, air cleaner housing, and the resonator assembly.
  5. Remove the battery cable and ground cable bracket from the battery base. Remove the battery base and the battery base bracket.
  6. Detach the transaxle ground cable and the speed sensor connectors. Disconnect the solenoid valve connectors.
  7. Detach the lock-up control solenoid valve and shift control solenoid valve connectors.
  8. Disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle control lever.
  9. Detach the mainshaft speed sensor connector.
  10. Disconnect the transaxle cooler hoses from the joint pipes and plug the hoses.
  11. Disconnect the starter cables and remove the starter.
  12. Detach the Countershaft Speed Sensor (CSS) connector.
  13. Unplug the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector.
  14. Install a suitable hoist to the engine.
  15. Remove the 4 upper bolts attaching the transaxle to the engine block.
  16. Loosen the 3 bolts attaching the front engine mount bracket to the engine.
  17. Remove the transaxle mount.
  18. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the front wheels.
  19. Drain the transaxle fluid and reinstall the drain plug with a new washer and tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  20. Remove the splash shield.
  21. Remove the subframe center beam.
  22. Remove the cotter pins and lower arm ball joint nuts, then separate the ball joints from the lower arms using a suitable tool. Discard the cotter pins.
  23. Remove the right damper pinch bolt, then separate the damper fork and damper.
  24. Remove the bolts and nut, then remove the right radius rod.
  25. Using a small prytool, carefully pry the right and left halfshafts out of the differential. Remove the right and left halfshafts. Tie plastic bags over the halfshaft ends to prevent damage to the CV boots and splines.
  26. Remove the bolts mounting the intermediate shaft, then remove the intermediate shaft from the differential.
  27. Remove the torque converter cover and shift cable cover.
  28. Remove the shift control cable by removing the lockbolt. Remove the shift cable lever from the control shaft. Don't disconnect the control lever from the shift cable. Wire the shift cable out of the work area and be careful not to kink it.
  29. Remove the 8 drive plate bolts one at a time while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
  30. Place a suitable jack under the transaxle and raise the jack just enough to take weight off of the mounts.
  31. Remove the intake manifold bracket.
  32. Remove the transaxle housing mounting bolts.
  33. Remove the mounting bolts from the rear engine mount bracket.
  34. Remove the 4 transaxle housing mounting bolts and 3 mount bracket nuts.
  35. Pull the transaxle away from the engine until it clears the 14mm dowel pins, then lower it using the jack.
To install:
Use new self-locking nuts when assembling the front suspension components. Install new set rings onto the halfshaft inboard joint splines. Replace any color-coded self-locking bolts.
  1. Flush the transaxle cooling lines before installing the transaxle using a suitable a pressurized flushing canister. Use only Honda biodegradable flushing fluid. Other types of flushing fluid may damage the A/T cooling system. After flushing is complete, dry the cooler lines with compressed air for two minutes, or until flushing agent stops draining from the system.
  2. Be sure the 2, 14mm dowel pins are installed into the torque converter housing.
  3. Install the torque converter onto the transaxle mainshaft with a new hub O-ring. Install the starter motor onto the transaxle case and tighten the mounting bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  4. Raise the transaxle into position and install the transaxle housing mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  5. Install the rear engine mounting bolts and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  6. Install the intake manifold bracket and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  7. Install the upper bolts attaching the transaxle to the engine and tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  8. Tighten the front engine mount bracket bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  9. Install the transaxle mount and loosely install the nuts and bolt that attach the mount. Tighten the nuts first to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm), then tighten the bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  10. Remove the jack from the transaxle.
  11. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate with the 8 bolts. Tighten the bolts in 2 steps in a crisscross pattern: first to 54 inch lbs. (6 Nm), and finally to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Check for free rotation after tightening the last bolt.
  12. Install the shift control cable and control cable holder. Tighten the shift cable lockbolt to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm). Tighten the shift cable cover bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  13. Install the torque converter cover and tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  14. Remove the engine hoist.
  15. Install the radius rod and damper fork.
  16. Install the intermediate shaft into the differential and tighten the mounting bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  17. Install a new set ring on the end of each halfshaft.
  18. Turn the right steering knuckle fully outward and slide the axle into the differential until the set ring snaps into the differential side gear. Repeat the procedure on the left side.
  19. Install the damper fork bolts and ball joint nuts to the lower arms. Tighten the ball joint nut to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
  20. Install the subframe center beam and tighten the center beam bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  21. Install the splash shield.
  22. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  23. Attach the speed sensor connector.
  24. Support the right front knuckle with a floor jack, until the weight of the vehicle is held by the jack. Tighten the damper fork pinch bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm). Tighten the radius rod bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (105 Nm), and the radius rod nut to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm). Hold the damper fork bolt with a wrench, and tighten the nut to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm). Remove the floor jack.
  25. Connect the cables to the starter.
  26. Reconnect the throttle control cable.
  27. Connect the lock-up control solenoid valve and shift control solenoid valve connectors.
  28. Attach the speed sensor connectors and the transaxle ground cable.
  29. Connect the transaxle cooler inlet hose to the joint pipe. Attach a drain hose to the return line.
  30. Install the battery base stay and the battery base.
  31. Install the resonator assembly, the air cleaner assembly, and the air intake hose.
  32. Install the battery and connect the positive, then the negative battery cables to the battery.
  33. Refill the transaxle with the proper type and amount of automatic transaxle fluid.
    1. With the flusher drain hose attached to the cooler return line.
    2. Place the transaxle in P , run the engine for 30 seconds, or until approximately 1 quart of fluid is discharged. Immediately shut off the engine. This completes the cooler flushing process.
    3. Remove the drain hose and reconnect the cooler return line.
    4. Refill the transaxle to the proper level with automatic transaxle fluid.
  34. Start the engine, set the parking brake, and shift the transaxle through all gears 3 times. Check for proper shift cable adjustment.
  35. Let the engine reach operating temperature with the transaxle in P or N . Then, shut off the engine and check the fluid level.
  36. Road test the vehicle.
  37. After road testing the vehicle, loosen the front engine mount bracket bolts, then retighten them to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  38. Check and adjust the vehicle's front end alignment.
  39. Enter the radio security code.
3.0CL
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive cable.
  2. Remove the battery and tray.
  3. Remove the clamps securing the battery cables to the base.
  4. Remove the intake air duct and the air cleaner assembly.
  5. Raise the vehicle and drain the transaxle fluid. Replace the drain plug with a new washer.
  6. Remove the starter wiring and harness clamps, remove the breather and radiator hoses from the retainer.
  7. Detach the wiring connectors from the transaxle assembly.
  8. Disconnect the cooler lines and point them up to prevent fluid drainage.
  9. Remove the bolt and nut securing the rear stiffener and remove the stiffener.
  10. Remove the bolts securing the transaxle to the engine.
  11. Remove the front mounting bracket bolts.
  12. Remove the engine under cover.
  13. Disconnect the lower shock absorber mounting and the lower ball joints from the control arms.
  14. Remove the bolts securing the radius rods to the lower arms.
  15. Remove the halfshafts. Keep the splined ends of the shafts clean.
  16. Mark the position of the sub-frame on the main-frame and remove it.
  17. Remove the engine brace from the rear of the engine.
  18. Remove the shift cable cover, bracket and cable.
  19. Remove the 8 bolts securing the drive plate to the torque converter.
  20. Attach a chain hoist to the engine and raise it slightly.
  21. Place a jack under the transaxle.
  22. Remove the transaxle mount bracket.
  23. Remove the intake manifold support bracket.
  24. Remove the rear mount bracket.
  25. Pull the transaxle back slightly until it comes off the dowels and lower it from the vehicle. Do not let the torque converter fall out of the transaxle.
To install:
  1. If removed, install the torque converter using a new O-ring.
  2. Install the dowel pins in the torque converter housing.
  3. Raise the transaxle to the engine and install the rear mount bracket. Tighten the 8mm bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and the 12mm bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4. Install the transaxle-to-engine bolts. Tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  5. Connect the breather tube with the dot facing up and install the transaxle mount bracket. Tighten the nuts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm) and the through-bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  6. Install the driveplate-to-torque converter bolts. Tighten them to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm) in a crisscross pattern.
  7. Install the shift cable, bracket and cover.
  8. Install the engine brace on the rear of the engine.
  9. Install the halfshafts.
  10. Install the sub-frame after aligning the matchmarks. Tighten the rear bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) and the front bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  11. Install the front mount. Tighten the bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  12. Connect the shock absorbers and the radius rods to the lower control arms.
  13. Install the engine under cover.
  14. Attach all the wiring connectors.
  15. Connect the starter wiring and install the harness clamps.
  16. Install the battery.
  17. Install the air cleaner assembly and intake duct.
  18. Refill the transaxle with the proper amount and type of automatic transmission fluid.
Vigor and 2.5TL
  1. Shift the transaxle into P .
  2. Disconnect the negative, then the positive battery cables, then remove the battery and battery tray.
  3. Without disconnecting the wires, remove the ABS relay box and set it aside.
  4. Remove the heat shield and sub-ground cable.
The distributor may be removed for better access to the transaxle case bolts.
  1. Remove the emission control equipment box from the firewall without disconnecting the vacuum hoses.
  2. Remove the torque converter cover and rotate the crankshaft as required to remove the eight torque converter flexplate bolts.

  1. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harnesses and tag them for reassembly.
  2. Remove the transaxle ground cable.
  3. Remove the upper transaxle bolts and the 26mm shim.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the guard plate and remove the plug to drain the transaxle fluid.
  6. Remove the transaxle left side mount and bracket.
  7. Disconnect the oil cooler hoses.
  8. The differential stays on the vehicle. Remove the secondary cover and the 33mm sealing bolt and install an extension shaft removal tool. Disconnect the differential extension shaft from the transaxle.
Suitable extension shaft puller and installation tools are needed to disconnect the extension shaft from the differential.
  1. Remove the front exhaust pipe "A" and its mounting brackets.
  2. Remove the shift cable cover and disconnect the shift cable from the control shaft. Remove the cable mounting bracket and wire the cable up and out of the way.
  3. Place a transaxle jack securely under the transaxle and raise it to take the weight off the mounts.
  4. Use an offset wrench to remove the mid-mounts and the mid-mount spacer.
  5. Remove the transaxle case bolts. Remove the torque converter cover mounting bolt located on the converter housing. Do not remove the torque converter cover.
  6. Slide the transaxle back and away from the engine. Carefully lower it from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Flush the transaxle cooler lines.
  2. Install the torque converter onto the mainshaft using a new O-ring. Install the mounting pins into the transaxle case.
  3. Install a new set ring on the extension shaft and lightly lubricate the splines with high temperature molybdenum grease. Pack the opening in the drive pinion with high temperature molybdenum grease.
  4. Install the transaxle and start all of the bolts. Don't forget the 26mm shim between the transaxle and differential. Tighten the 12mm bolts to 54 ft. lbs. (75 Nm). Tighten the torque converter cover bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  5. Install the mid-mounts and brackets. Tighten the bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43-44 Nm).
  6. Install a new set ring, and install the extension shaft using an extension shaft installer. Be sure the shaft snaps into place.
  7. Pack the shaft area with molybdenum grease, but keep the thread area clean. Apply liquid gasket to the sealing bolt threads and tighten the bolt to 58 ft. lbs. (78-80 Nm). Install the cover.
  8. Install the transaxle left side mount and bracket. Tighten the mount bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Tighten the bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  9. Install the torque converter bolts and tighten them in 2 steps in a criss-cross pattern to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Install the torque converter cover and tighten the bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  10. The remaining components are installed in the reverse order from which they were removed.
  11. Connect all the wiring harnesses and the battery cables. Refill the transaxle with fresh fluid.
  12. When all parts have been installed, start the engine and shift through all the gears 3 times to fill all the passages with fluid, then check the shift cable and adjust as needed. When the engine is fully warmed up, stop the engine and check the fluid level.
  13. Enter the radio security code.
Legend, 3.2TL and 3.5RL
  1. Disconnect the negative, then the positive battery cables.
  2. Shift the transaxle into P .
  3. Remove the control box from the bulkhead without disconnecting the vacuum hoses. Place the control box out of the way.
  4. Detach the transaxle sub-harness connectors, and remove the sub-harness clamp.
  5. Remove the three bolts securing the transaxle dipstick pipe bracket.
  6. Remove the upper transaxle mounting bolts.
  7. Drain the fluid from the transaxle into a sealable container. Install the drain plug with a new washer and tighten the plug to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  8. Pull the carpet back under the passenger seat to expose the secondary heated Oxygen (O 2 S) sensor connector. Detach the connector and push it out from the inside of the vehicle.
  9. Remove the heat shields from exhaust pipe "A".
  10. Remove the nuts attaching exhaust pipe "A" to the exhaust manifolds and the catalytic converter. Remove the front exhaust pipe "A" and discard the gaskets.
  11. Remove the O 2 S sensor wiring harness cover and grommet, then remove the catalytic converter. Discard the nuts and gasket.
  12. Remove the exhaust heat shield from the floor of the vehicle.
  13. Disconnect the transaxle cooler hoses, then plug the hoses and pipes.
  14. Remove the shift cable cover mounting bolts and remove the wiring harness clamps from the cover. Remove the shift cable cover from the transaxle.
  15. Remove the shift cable holder from the holder base, do not lose the washers.
  16. Remove the locknut attaching the shift cable to the control lever, then remove the shift cable.
  17. Remove the transaxle dipstick pipe from the torque converter housing.
  18. Remove the lower plate from under the rack and pinion, then install the two rack and pinion mounting bolts.
  19. Remove the shift cable guide bracket from the transaxle beam.
  20. Remove the transaxle beam, rear transaxle mount racket/mount and exhaust pipe hanger.

  1. Be sure that the transaxle is in park, then remove the 36mm sealing bolt from the transaxle.
  2. Install a suitable extension shaft puller onto the end of the extension shaft. Using the extension shaft puller, disconnect the extension shaft from the differential. Pull the extension shaft out enough to remove the set ring.
Do not try to remove the extension shaft, it cannot be removed from the transaxle this way.
  1. Place a transaxle jack under the transaxle and raise the transaxle to take the weight off of the mounts.
  2. Remove the stop holder, the mid mount stops and the mid mounts.
  3. Remove the engine stiffener.
  4. Remove the torque converter covers.
  5. Remove the six drive plate bolts one at a time while rotating the crankshaft.
If necessary, remove the spark plugs while removing the drive plate bolts.
  1. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts.
  2. Pull the transaxle away from the engine until it clears the dowel pins, then lower it on the transaxle jack.
To install:
  1. Flush the transaxle cooling lines before installing the transaxle using a suitable a pressurized flushing canister. Use only Honda biodegradable flushing fluid. Other types of flushing fluid may damage the A/T cooling system. After flushing is complete, dry the cooler lines with compressed air for two minutes, or until flushing agent stops draining from the system.
  2. Install the torque converter to the transaxle with a new O-ring. Install the two dowel pins to the torque converter housing.
  3. Clean the extension shaft opening on the differential side. Keep the extension shaft opening clean of foreign material.
  4. Apply a suitable super high temperature grease to the splines on the extension shaft, then install a new set ring to the groove.
  5. Raise the transaxle into position and attach the transaxle to the engine. Install the housing mounting bolt with the 26mm shim. Do not install the transaxle housing bolt on the engine stiffener side at this time.
  6. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate with the six bolts. Rotate the crankshaft as necessary to tighten the bolts to 120 inch lbs. (13 Nm), then tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm). After tightening the bolts check that the crankshaft rotates freely.
  7. Install the torque converter covers and tighten the bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8. Install the engine stiffener. Tighten the 8mm bolts loosely and tighten the transaxle housing bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm), then tighten the rest of the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  9. Install the transaxle housing mounting bolts to the transaxle side. Tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  10. Install the mid mounts, then the mid mount stops. Tighten the 8mm bolts loosely, then install the stop holder.
  11. Tighten the mid mount 10mm bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm) and tighten the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Tighten the new nuts attaching the mid mounts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) and tighten the nuts attaching the stop holder to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  12. Remove the transaxle jack from the transaxle.
  13. Install the transaxle beam to the rear transaxle mount bracket/mount. Tighten the two bolts loosely, then install them with the exhaust pipe bracket on the rear cover and body.
  14. Tighten the three transaxle beam bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  15. Tighten the three rear transaxle mount bracket bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  16. Tighten the two bolts attaching the mount it the beam to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  17. Install the shift cable guide to the transaxle beam and tighten the bolt to 7.2 ft. lbs. (9.8 Nm).
  18. Install the extension shaft using the extension shaft installation tool. Be sure that the extension shaft locks into the secondary gear and the differential.
  19. Fill the secondary gear with a suitable super high temperature grease. Applying sealer to the threads of the 36mm sealing bolt, then install the bolt and tighten to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
  20. Remove the two bolts from the rack and pinion necessary to install the lower plate, then install the lower plate and the attaching bolts. Tighten the lower plate attaching bolt to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm) and tighten the rack and pinion bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  21. Connect the shift cable control lever to the control shaft, then install the washer and nut. Tighten the nut to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  22. Install the shift cable holder to the shift cable holder base with the mounting washers. Install the attaching bolts and tighten the bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  23. Install the shift cable cover and tighten the mounting bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  24. Connect the cooler feed hose to the pipe.
  25. Install the ATF dipstick pipe with a new O-ring on the torque converter housing.
  26. Install the transaxle sub-harness clamp to the harness.
  27. Install the exhaust heat shield to the floor of the vehicle and tighten the bolts to 86 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).
  28. Install the catalytic converter with a new gasket. Install the wiring harness and the grommet to the vehicle, then install the harness cover. Tighten the cover bolts to 86 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).
  29. Install exhaust pipe "A" with new gaskets and new nuts. Tighten the nuts attaching the pipe to the manifolds to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) and tighten the nuts attaching the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Tighten the catalytic converter rear attaching nuts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  30. Install the heat shields to exhaust pipe "A" and tighten the nuts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  31. Attach the secondary heated O 2 S sensor connector, located under the passenger front seat.
  32. Install the transaxle upper mounting bolts and tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  33. Install the transaxle dipstick pipe bracket bolts and tighten the bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  34. Connect the transaxle sub-harness connectors.
  35. Install the control box and tighten the mounting bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  36. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cable.
  37. Fill the transaxle with the recommended type and amount of fluid.
    1. Leave the flusher drain hose attached to the cooler return line.
    2. With the transaxle in park, run the engine for 30 seconds, or until approximately one quart of fluid is discharged. As soon as one quart of fluid drains, shut off the engine. This completes the cooler flushing process.
    3. Remove the drain hose and reconnect the cooler return line.
    4. Refill the transaxle to the proper level with the recommended type and amount of fluid.
  38. Let the engine reach proper operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on) with the transaxle in N (neutral) or P (park). Turn the engine OFF and check the fluid level.
  39. Enter the radio security code.
