How to Replace Vehicles A/C Evaporator Core?

The tube and fin assembly located inside the evaporator housing, where 


refrigerant fluid picks up heat when it changes into a vapor.



A defective evaporator produces an insufficient supply of cool air. This symptom is often the result of a leak in the evaporator core. Other causes include:
  • Dirt- or debris-plugged core; clean core
  • Cracked or broken case; replace and/or caulk the case
  • Leaking seal or O-ring; replace the seal and/or O-ring.

The following procedure mentioned below is a general removal procedure of A/C evaporator core. The evaporator is removed differently from different vehicles.
For example, a 1994 Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable instructs you to, "Using a hot knife, cut the top of the air conditioning evaporator housing between the raised outline."

But a 1993 Ford Probe manual says to simply remove the blower motor and assembly screws before separating the case halves and removing the evaporator.

The following procedure assumes that access to the evaporator has been determined.
  • Recover the refrigerant.
  • Drain the radiator if the heater hose(s) has to be removed to gain access.
  • Remove the heater hose(s), if necessary.
  • Remove any wiring harness, heat shields, brackets, covers, and braces that may restrict access to the evaporator core.
  • Remove the liquid line at the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) or fixed orifice tube (FOT).
  • Remove the suction line at the evaporator or accumulator outlet.
  • Gain access to the evaporator core as outlined in the service manual.
  • Lift the evaporator from the vehicle.
  • Drain the oil from the evaporator into a calibrated cup.
  • For replacement, reverse the preceding procedure. First, replace the oil with the same amount and type you previously drained.

The Condenser is a liquidizer;Its the component of a refrigeration system in which refrigerant vapor is changed to a liquid by the removal of heat.

Before replacing the condenser,its advisable to inspect the condenser.

If its inspected that condenser is got faulty/worn out cracked,then yes it has to be replaced.
The AC Condenser replacing details are as follows :-----

  • Place the ignition switch in the "OFF" position.
  • Place a fender cover on the car to protect the finish.
  • Purge the system of refrigerant. Use the proper recovery equipment.
  • Locate the component that is to be removed for repair or replacement.
  • Remove access panel(s) or other hardware necessary to gain access to the component.
  • Remove the hood hold-down mechanism and any other cables or hardware that inhibit access to the condenser.
  • Remove the hot-gas line at the top of the condenser.
  • Remove and discard any O-rings.
  • Remove the liquid line at the bottom of the condener.
  • Remove and discard any O-rings.
  • Remove and retain any attaching bolts and/or nuts holding the condenser in place.
  • Lift the condenser from the car.
  • Install the new condenser by reversing these procedures.
NOTE
Be sure to install new O-rings, if equipped, on the hot gas and liquid lines.
  • Leak test the system.
  • Evacuate the system.
  • Charge the system with refrigerant.

Now go through the Service procedures:---

A manifolded condenser came out in the late 1980's. It cannot be flushed like the dual parallel condenser. It has its inlet and outlet on the same tube but has seams that separate about every five tubes down. Some manufacturers will not pay warranty time on a system flush but they will pay for a filter.
Flushing must be done with a liquid so grit is carried out. Do not use a vapor (shop air). Using 15 pounds of R-11 refrigerant was the old way that systems were flushed, before the hole in the ozone layer was discovered. Today, mineral spirits are often used for flushing. Mineral spirits are chemically related to mineral oil so they do not present a problem with the refrigerant on R-12 systems. They should not be used on R-134A systems.
