Chevrolet Engine cooling fan not running

Cooling fan not running on Chevy cavalier




The engine cooling fan not working causing engine to run hot, but fan does operate when defrost or a/c are used.

So i don't think fan is actually the issue.




UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEM:----
The fan turns on when A/c or heater is turned ON, the engine temperature will sit where it is supposed to.
  I.E. it does not run hot as long as the fan is on.

 but if the A/c is not turned ON then fan will not come ON and engine overheats.

The fan turns on via air conditioning or via coolant temperature.

So its coming on with A/c and heater turned on,but not coming on when the coolant temperature gives the command.


The fan is controlled by same relay and same fuse to turn on,whether its by A/c or coolant temperature.

And now when we know that fan is running when command is from A/c so its clear that fuse and relays are working fine.

Both the ac position and the coolant temperature sensor sends signal to ECM(Computer) to turn on the fan, then the engine computer sends that signal to the relay


So now its confirmed that relay or fuse is extremely unlikely to be the issue

The problem is most probably the coolant temperature sensor, the alternative would be a faulty engine control module or faulty wiring between the coolant temperature sensor and the engine control module.


If you notice CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING UP ON DASH,then most likely its faulty coolant sensor.But if No check engine light then issue will be mostly the faulty ECM( Computer module).

1992 Chrysler Jeep Cherokee: A/C System Pressure is Same on Both High and Low?

In this condition the A.C cooling problem will be noticed.


The 1992 year Chrysler Jeep came with R12 from the factory.if Your jeep is using R134A, then it was converted.


It wasnt until late 1994-early 1995 that R134a became available.

the system calls for 38 ounces, but with R134A conversion, less is installed due to molecule differences in the refrigerant. The industry rule of thumb is 80% of called for. So for yours that will be 30ounces.

Ok, pressure should be 28-35psi on low side and 175-220psi on high side. If it were a restriction in the expansion valve, pressure would be high on the low side, but near normal on the high side.

Yours is neither sucking on the low side, nor pumping on the high side, hence the high low side pressure, and low high side pressure.

If you are positive of the system being at the correct level and compressor engaging, then only one thing causes this - weak compressor. It needs to be replaced.

So the compressor needs to be inspected and tested before getting replaced.

As per description it says compressor is faulty.

2000 Dodge Intrepid: Only heat no cold?

Only heat works no cold air.Temperature control not making any change.

On this model it has Manual temp control buttons.

It can be issue with control module itself.But there other possibilities too.Before changing any other thing it advisable to check other possibilities too.
Go through further troubleshooting mentioned below:-------


Most of the time it is due to a faulty temperature blend door actuator, but may be the blend door itself. Access the actuator and disconnect the harness connector to it. Use jumper wires from 12v source or battery to apply voltage to the #1 terminal and a ground wire to the #2 terminal. then apply power to the #5 terminal while #2 terminal is grounded. If the actuator doesnt work, then replace actuator(directions to access and replace are below). If it does work, then the blend door is bad and this unfotunately means the whole dash has to come out to replace it

TEMPERATURE DOOR ACTUATOR



The blend-air (temperature) door actuator is an electric motor which mechanically positions the temperature door. A feedback strip in the actuator allows the computer control to know the exact position of the temperature door at all times. The blend-air door actuator is not serviceable and must be replaced if found to be defective.

The temperature door actuator is located at the bottom of the heater housing at the center tunnel

REMOVAL


  1. Open hood and disconnect the negative battery cable remote terminal from the remote battery post
    Remove left and right underpanel silencer/ducts.
    Remove two screws from actuator which are accessible from the right side of center stack.
    Remove one screw from actuator on left side.
    Pull actuator straight down from shaft and disconnect electrical connection. Upon removal, note the shaft position of the actuator, because the shaft on this motor is keyed. When installing new actuator, its shaft must be positioned in the same location.temperature door actuator

INSTALLATION

For installation, reverse the above procedures.

2000 Chevy Corvette: Vehicle runs hot when A/C is ON?

Engine gets overheated hot in traffic when A/c is turned on.

But in Normal open road it works fine.

In this types of cases the thermostat and cooling fan needs to be monitored.

There are two engine cooling fans on Chevy corvette 2000 year model vehicle.


So first you do need to verify that both fans are properly  working. For that you may need to use a flashlight to see it spinning. If it isnt, then the basics of checking for power to the motor, and if no power, then checking the cooling fan relays and fuse(both labeled) in the engine compartment fuse box.

If no power at the fuses, then engine coolant temperature sensor and ac pressure switches will need to be tested and finally, if needed, the pcm tested.

If the fan is working, then first check for any missing, cracked or broken fan shroud that is allowing for inefficient fan cooling.

If ok, then both ect sensor and ac pressure switch and pcm will need to be monitored with a scan tool to see if the fans are coming on at proper temperature and ac pressure and then fan monitored to see that it is spinning at proper speeds.

I know that sounds like a lot, but with symptoms described, this is in the fan operation in some capacity and will require going thru the above steps to find the underlying cause and then repair.

Do not uncap the drier or accumulator until the unit is ready for installation. Remember: the desiccant attracts moisture from the surrounding air.
WARNING
Only EPA-certified technicians can purchase R-12 refrigerant, since proper recovery and recycling techniques are required to prevent damaging the environment. Improper disposal of R-12 refrigerant can result in a fine.
The receiver drier is usually located under the hood of the car. The drier should be placed where it can be kept as cool as possible. At least one independent manufacturer of aftermarket systems mounts the drier inside the evaporator case where it is always surrounded by the cool air of the evaporator.
The inlet and outlet fittings of receiver driers may be 3/8-inch SAE flare, 5/16-inch barb, O-ring, or block type. Also, receiver driers may have specially formed inlet and outlet tubing before the fitting provisions. As a rule of thumb, it is recommended to replace a receiver drier with an exact duplicate. This is particularly important to ensure refrigerant capability with the desiccant.
Manufacturers' recommendations should be followed when mounting a drier. For proper operation, the vertical-type drier must be mounted so that it does not incline more than 15°. The inlet of the drier must be connected to the condenser outlet and the outlet of the drier to the evaporator metering inlet.
The word IN is generally stamped on the inlet side of the drier. If the inlet is not stamped, an arrow indicating the direction of refrigerant flow should be visible. Remember that the refrigerant flows from the condenser bottom toward the metering device inlet. If the drier is connected in reverse, insufficient cooling will result.
As a result of improper handling or shipping, the internal parts of the drier may become dislodged and cause a partial restriction within the drier. This condition is indicated by a marked temperature change between the inlet and the outlet of the tank. If the restriction is great enough, frosting occurs at the drier outlet.
If the pickup tube is broken because of rough handling, abnormal flashing of the gas occurs in the liquid line. This is the same indication that is evident due to a low charge of refrigerant. In either case, a new drier must be installed.
Screens are located in the inlet of the metering device, the inlet of the compressor, and in the receiver drier. The screen in the thermostatic expansion valve and compressor can be cleaned or replaced. If the screen in the fixed orifice tube or drier becomes clogged, the entire component must be replaced.

First read and know what is Accumulator and what is its working operation:----
  1. A tank located in the outlet of the evaporator to receive refrigerant that leaves the evaporator. A component used to store or hold liquid refrigerant in an air-conditioning system. This device is constructed to ensure that no liquid refrigerant enters the compressor.
  2. A device that cushions the motion of a clutch and servo action in an automatic transmission.
  3. A register or storage location that forms the result of an arithmetic or logic operation. Commonly used when a series of calculations are to be used.

Now Go through this Inspecting procedure:----

Air conditioners use either a receiver dryer or an accumulator. These devices vary slightly as to function and differ as to where they are installed in the system:
  • A receiver dryer is installed in the high side.
  • An accumulator is installed in the low side.
A receiver dryer fills and siphons liquid refrigerant from the bottom.
An accumulator separates vapor and liquid. It pulls off vapor from the top. Courtesy of Ford Motor Company.
Some systems have a sight glass on the receiver dryer or in the high pressure liquid line so that unwanted vapor bubbles can be spotted as the system operates. This can give a quick check of whether the refrigerant level is too low. A sight glass is only found on the high pressure side of the system. Also, look for signs of leakage. If you find leaks, replace the part.
An accumulator cannot be serviced. Inspect it to see if it is defective or wet, if so, the entire unit must be replaced. Also check the expansion tube that serves as a metering device to the evaporator. If the expansion tube is clogged, it is again necessary to replace the accumulator.
If you think your accumulator or receiver dryer is defective, you'll need to perform an a/c system test.

How to Replace Auto AC Condenser?

The Condenser is a liquidizer;Its the component of a refrigeration system in which refrigerant vapor is changed to a liquid by the removal of heat.

If its inspected that condenser is got faulty/worn out cracked,then yes it has to be replaced.
The AC Condenser replacing details are as follows :-----

  • Place the ignition switch in the "OFF" position.
  • Place a fender cover on the car to protect the finish.
  • Purge the system of refrigerant. Use the proper recovery equipment.
  • Locate the component that is to be removed for repair or replacement.
  • Remove access panel(s) or other hardware necessary to gain access to the component.
  • Remove the hood hold-down mechanism and any other cables or hardware that inhibit access to the condenser.
  • Remove the hot-gas line at the top of the condenser.
  • Remove and discard any O-rings.
  • Remove the liquid line at the bottom of the condener.
  • Remove and discard any O-rings.
  • Remove and retain any attaching bolts and/or nuts holding the condenser in place.
  • Lift the condenser from the car.
  • Install the new condenser by reversing these procedures.
NOTE
Be sure to install new O-rings, if equipped, on the hot gas and liquid lines.
  • Leak test the system.
  • Evacuate the system.
  • Charge the system with refrigerant.
