Halfshaft
The following procedures cover vehicles equipped with manual or automatic transaxles.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATIONThe outer CV-joint cannot be removed from the halfshaft. Replacement of a CV-joint boot requires removal of the halfshaft. If the outer CV-joint has failed the entire shaft must be replaced as an assembly.
- With the vehicle on the ground, raise the locking tab on the spindle nut and loosen it with a suitable socket.

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the spindle nut and front wheels.
- Drain the differential or transaxle lubricant.
- Remove the strut fork nut and strut pinch bolt. Remove the strut fork.
- Remove the lower ball joint nut, then separate the lower ball joint using a suitable ball joint removal tool.
- Pull the knuckle outward and remove the halfshaft outboard CV-joint from the knuckle using a plastic mallet.
- Using a small prybar with a 3.5 x 7mm tip, carefully pry out the inboard CV-joint approximately 1 / 2 in. (13mm) in order to force the spring clip out of the groove in the differential side gears.
Be careful not to damage the oil seal. Do not pull on the inboard CV-joint, it may come apart.
- Pull the halfshaft out of the differential or the intermediate shaft. Replace the spring clip on the end of the inboard joint.
- Be sure to mark the roller grooves during disassembly to ensure proper positioning during reassembly.
- Remove the front and rear boot retaining bands, then separate the inboard joint from the halfshaft assembly.
- Mark the spider gear and the driveshaft so they can be installed in their original positions.
- Remove snapring, spider gear, then remove the stopper ring.
- Be sure to mark the position on the shaft where the dynamic strut goes, to ensure it will be reinstalled in its original position. Remove the inboard CV-joint boot, dynamic strut, then the outboard CV-joint boot.
- Wrap the spline with vinyl tape to prevent damage to the boots. Install the outboard boot, dynamic strut, and inboard boot, then remove the vinyl tape.
- Install the stopper ring onto the halfshaft groove, then install the spider gear in its original position by aligning the marks.
- Fit the snapring into the halfshaft groove.
- Pack the outboard joint boot with CV-joint grease only. Do not use a substitute, or mix types of grease.
- Fit the rollers to the spider gear with their high shoulders facing outward. Reinstall the rollers in their original positions on the spider gear.
- Pack the inboard joint boot with a suitable CV-joint grease.
- Fit the inboard joint onto the halfshaft. Hold the halfshaft assembly so the inboard joint points up to prevent it from falling off.
- With the boots installed, adjust the CV-joints in or out to place the inner boot ends in the original positions.
- Install the new boot bands on the boots and bend both sets of locking tabs. Lightly tap on the locking tabs to ensure a good fit.
- Always use a new set ring whenever the driveshaft is being installed. Be sure the driveshaft locks in the differential side gear groove and that the CV-joint stub-axle bottoms in the differential or the intermediate shaft.
- Tighten the ball joint nut to the proper specification for your vehicle, as follows:
The ball joint nut to 29-35 ft. lbs. (39-47 Nm). from 8Integra, 2.2CL, 2.3CL, 3.0CL and 2.5TL: 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-59 Nm)Legend, 3.2TL and 3.5RL: 54 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)Vigor: 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
- Install and tighten the lower strut nut and bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm), for all models except the 3.2TL. For the 3.2TL, tighten the lower strut nut and bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
- Install and tighten the upper pinch bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm) for all models except the 3.2TL. For the 3.2TL, tighten the upper pinch bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
- With the vehicle on the ground, tighten the spindle nut to the proper specification for your vehicle, as follows, then stake the nut with a new cotter pin:
Integra, 2.2CL, 2.3CL and 3.0CL: 134 ft. lbs. (182 Nm)2.5TL: 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm)Legend, 2.5TL, 3.2TL and 3.5RL: 242 ft. lbs. (355 Nm)Vigor: 180 ft. lbs. (250 Nm)
- Refill the transaxle or differential with the correct amount and type of fluid.
- Reconnect the battery cable and enter the radio security code.
