1995 Ford Taurus: Ignition switch not turning OFF?

Ignition switch replaced.The relays and fuses all checked ok.

But still the ignition switch will not turn off.

Try this, hot feed the fuse panel to make it run and turn off.

If this works,then problem is not ignition switch or relay or fuse.


The problem is  broken actuator rod in the steering column. It is a plastic rod with a metal pin the actuates the plastic rod for the ignition switch to turn the vehicle off. You can start the vehicle with the key because the two rods push against each other to start the car is there. But when you go to turn the vehicle off with the key, the rod will not pull the other rod for the ignition switch to turn the engine off because the pin has fallen out. The stering column will have to be removed from the vehicle and disassembled to replace the actuator rod. The  steering column needs to be disassembled. If you have no expierience with steering columns, it is very daunting to perform the job.Get it done at professional garage.

How to replace Ignition Lock Cylinder on Acura Car Models?

The procedure is as follows :---

Ignition Lock Cylinder

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1. Disable the air bag system.
2. Remove the lower panel of the dashboard.
3. Remove the knee bolster.
4. Remove the steering column upper and lower covers.
5. Unplug the connectors from the ignition switch.
6. Remove the steering column mounting nuts.
7. Lower the steering column.
8. Center punch the shear bolts.
9. Use a 3/16" (5mm) drill bit to drill out the heads of the bolts.
10. Remove the shear bolts, then remove the lock cylinder assembly.

To install:

11. Without the key in the lock cylinder, insert it into the steering column.
12. Finger-tighten the new shear bolts.
13. Insert the key into the new lock cylinder and check for proper switch operation.
14. Tighten the shear bolts until they snap off.
15. Align the steering column and tighten the bolts.
16. Plug the harness into the ignition switch.
17. Install the steering column covers.
18. Install the dashboard panel and knee bolster.
19. Enable the air bag system.
