How to remove power steering pump pressure sensor switch 2002 lincoln ls v8?

The power steering pressure switch is installed in the power steering high-pressure hose.

1. Disconnect electrical connector from power steering pressure switch.
2. Place a small container or shop towel beneath switch to collect any excess fluid.
3. Remove switch. Use back-up wrench on power steering line to prevent line bending.

The switch will have a hex on the base of it to put a wrench on. The line will as well, so what they want you to do is use 2 wrenches..one to hold the line steady so that you dont bend it and the other to undo the switch.

WARNING

If the air is not purged from the power steering system correctly, premature power steering pump failure can result. The condition can occur on pre-delivery vehicles with evidence of aerated fluid or on vehicles that have had steering component repairs.

1. Remove the power steering pump reservoir cap.
2. Tightly install the evacuation cap to the power steering pump reservoir.
3. Install the hose from the fill adapter manifold tee to the evacuation cap on the power steering pump reservoir.
4. Install the vacuum pump to the fill adapter manifold control valve.
5. Install the hose to the opposite fill adapter manifold control valve and submerge the open end of the hose into a container of clean, fresh power steering fluid.
   
   NOTE

   The fill adapter manifold control valves are in the open position when the point of the handles face the center of the fill adapter manifold.
6. Open the fill adapter manifold control valve connected to the power steering fluid container.
7. Close the fill adapter manifold control valve connected to the vacuum pump.
8. Using the vacuum pump, apply -30 inches-Hg (84-101 kPa) of vacuum to the power steering system.
9. Observe the vacuum gauge for 30 seconds.
10. If the vacuum gauge reading drops more than 1 inch-Hg (3 kPa), correct any leaks in the power steering system or the filling tools before proceeding.
    
    NOTE

    The vacuum pump gauge reading will drop slightly during this step.
11. Slowly open the fill adapter manifold control valve connected to the power steering fluid container until power steering fluid completely fills the hose.
12. Close the fill adapter manifold control valve connected to the power steering fluid container.
13. Using the vacuum pump, apply 25-30 inches-Hg (84-101 kPa) of vacuum to the power steering system.
14. Close the fill adapter manifold control valve connected to the vacuum pump.
15. Slowly open the fill adapter manifold control valve connected to the power steering fluid container.
16. When the power steering fluid has drained from the hose connected to the power steering fluid container, close the fill adapter manifold control valve connected to the power steering fluid container.
17. Remove the tools from the vehicle.
18. Install the power steering reservoir cap.
    
    WARNING

    Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops for more than 3 to 5 seconds at a time. Damage to the power steering pump can occur.
    
    
    
    NOTE

    There will be a slight drop in the power steering fluid level in the power steering fluid reservoir when the engine is started.
19. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from stop-to-stop 10 times.
20. Turn the ignition switch to OFF . 
    
    WARNING

    Do not overfill the reservoir.
21. Remove the power steering reservoir cap and fill the reservoir.
22. Install the power steering reservoir cap.

POWER STEERING PUMP REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION:-----

3.0L ENGINE

1. Remove four pushpins and the engine cover.
2. Remove the air cleaner and the air cleaner outlet tube.
3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
4. Unclamp and disconnect the power steering reservoir-to-pump hose and drain the reservoir into a suitable container.
5. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
6. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
7. Remove two bolts, one pushpin and the shield.
8. Remove two pushpins and the shield and remove the bolt.
9. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose and remove the bolt.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Remove the bolts and the pump.

To install:

1. Install a new O-ring on the power steering pressure hose fitting.
   
   NOTE

   Do not tighten the upper bolts until the lower bolts are installed.
2. Install the pump and the bolts.
3. Raise the vehicle.
4. Connect the power steering pressure hose and install the bolt.

5. Install the shield and two pushpins.
6. Install the shield, one pushpin and two bolts.
7. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Tighten all of the bolts of the pump.

10. Install the accessory drive belt.
11. Install the air cleaner outlet tube and the air cleaner cover.
    
    NOTE

    Inspect the pushpins for cracks or other damage. Install new pushpins if necessary.
12. Install the engine cover and four pushpins.
13. Fill and leak check the system.

3.9L ENGINE

1. Remove four pushpins and the engine cover.
2. Remove the air cleaner and the air cleaner outlet tube and remove the bolts.
3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
4. Unclamp and disconnect the power steering reservoir-to-pump hose (3691) and drain the reservoir into a suitable container.
5. Position the power steering reservoir out of the way by doing the following:
   
   
   Loosen the bolts.
   

   Rotate the reservoir from the insulator.
   

   Pull the reservoir down from the insulator and position the reservoir out of the way.
   
6. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
7. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
8. Remove two bolts, one pushpin and the shield.
9. Remove two pushpins and the shield.
10. Remove the bolt.
11. Disconnect the electrical connector and the wire retainer.
12. Remove four bolts and position the A/C compressor out of the way.
13. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose.
14. Remove the bolts.
15. Lower the vehicle.
16. Remove the bolts and the pump.

To install:

1. Using the appropriate special tool, install a new O-ring on the power steering pressure hose fitting.
   
   NOTE

   Do not tighten the upper bolts until the lower bolts are installed.
2. Position the pump and install the bolts.
3. Raise the vehicle.
4. Install the bolts.

6. Position the A/C compressor and install four bolts.

7. Connect the wire retainer and the electrical connector.
8. Install the bolt.
9. Install the shield and two pushpins.
10. Install the shield, one pushpin and two bolts.
11. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Tighten the bolts.
14. Connect the reservoir by doing the following:
    
    
    Push the reservoir up on the insulator.
    

    Rotate the reservoir on the insulator.
    

    Tighten the bolts.

15. Connect and clamp the power steering reservoir-to-pump hose.
16. Install the accessory drive belt.
17. Install the bolts.
18. Install the air cleaner outlet tube and the air cleaner..
    
    NOTE

    Inspect the pushpins for cracks or other damage. Install new pushpins if necessary.

19. Install the engine cover and four pushpins.
20. Fill and leak check the system.

Steering linkage removal and installation:---

WARNING

The boots and clamps are designed to provide an airtight seal and protect the internal components of the steering gear. If the seal is not airtight the vacuum generated during turning will draw water and contamination into the gear causing premature damage.

WARNING

Zip ties do not produce an airtight seal and must not be used.

WARNING

The inner ball joint grease is not compatible with water and contamination trapped in the grease will degrade the life of the joint.

WARNING

If present, the orientation of the vent tube must be noted so the boots and vent tubes can be installed in the correct location.

1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
2. Loosen the tie-rod end jam nut.
   
   NOTE

   The hex holding feature can be used to prevent turning of the stud while removing the nut.
3. Remove the nut and detach the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.
   
   NOTE

   Note the number of times the tie-rod ends turn for assembly reference.
   
   
   
   NOTE

   If repairing the right side, it will be necessary to pull back the left inner tie rod boot to hold the steering gear.
4. Remove the inner and outer front suspension steering ball stud boot seal clamps.
5. Remove the front suspension steering ball stud boot seal.
   
   WARNING

   Place the steering gear at the center position. Use a ¹⁵ /₁₆crowfoot on the flat of the rack gear to resist rotation and to prevent damage during removal and installation of the front wheel spindle tie-rod.
   
   
   
   NOTE

   An assistant may be needed for removal of the right front wheel spindle tie-rod.
6. Using the special tool, remove the front wheel spindle tie-rod.
   
   WARNING

   Thoroughly remove any abrasive material. This material is extremely harmful to the steering gear.
7. Thoroughly clean and inspect all the parts to be reused. Replace the parts as necessary.

To install:

1. Lubricate the front wheel spindle tie-rod inner groove with steering gear grease where the front suspension steering ball stud boot seal is clamped.
   
   NOTE

   Check that the front suspension steering ball stud boot seal is positioned correctly over the steering gear housing bead at the large Inside Diameter (ID) and is in the front wheel spindle tie-rod groove at the small ID.
   
   
   
   NOTE

   Check that the front suspension steering ball stud boot seal is not twisted and the breather tube is securely inserted into the breather nipple at both front suspension steering ball stud boot seals.
2. Using the special tool, install the front wheel spindle tie-rod.
3. Replace the front suspension steering ball stud boot seal.
4. Install the inner and outer front suspension steering ball stud boot seal clamps.
5. Attach the tie-rod end on the wheel knuckle.

6. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

Steering wheel removal and installation:---

1. Center the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.
2. Remove the horn blow switch.
3. Loosen the steering wheel retaining bolt.
4. Using the special tool, loosen the steering wheel.

5. Remove and discard the steering wheel retaining bolt.
6. Remove the steering wheel.

To install:

1. Install the steering wheel and a new steering wheel retaining bolt.

2. Install the horn blow switch.

WARNING

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
2. Remove the power steering pump reservoir cap.
3. Tightly install the evacuation cap to the power steering pump reservoir.
4. Install the hose from the fill adapter manifold tee to the evacuation cap on the power steering pump reservoir.
5. Install the vacuum pump to the fill adapter manifold control valve.
6. Install the hose to the opposite fill adapter manifold control valve and submerge the open end of the hose into a container of clean, fresh power steering fluid.
   
   NOTE

   The fill adapter manifold control valves are in the open position when the point of the handles face the center of the fill adapter manifold.
7. Open the fill adapter manifold control valve connected to the power steering fluid container.
8. Close the fill adapter manifold control valve connected to the vacuum pump.
9. Using the vacuum pump, apply -30 inches-Hg (84-101 kPa) of vacuum to the power steering system.

18. Remove the tools from the vehicle.
19. Install the power steering reservoir cap.

20. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from stop-to-stop 10 times.
21. Turn the ignition switch to OFF .

    Do not overfill the reservoir.
22. Remove the power steering reservoir cap and fill the reservoir.
23. Install the power steering reservoir cap.
