Air conditioner blows air but not cold air

A/C is not blowing cold air, but seems to be running .

When the Air conditioner is turned ON,the Air starts blowing out.It blows the air of  same temperature as outside air.
Problem noticed on 2000 Dodge Caravan SXT model.

WHAT ARE POSSIBILITIES THAT CAN CAUSE THIS PROBLEM?

AC  blowing just a few degrees cooler than the air. This problem can be caused by

  • Faulty Compressor.
  • Faulty Expansion Valve.
  • Low refrigerant.

HOW TO TEST IF COMPRESSOR IS GETTING ENGAGED OR NOT?
Locate the compressor and view the pulley. On the front of the compressor is a pulley driven by the belt, in front of the pulley is the clutch. If the compressor is engaging then the clutch will be spinning along with the pulley.

OK,BUT WHERE IS COMPRESSOR LOCATED ON DODGE CARAVAN?

On 2000 Dodge Caravan A/C compressor is mounted on the front of the engine and has two large aluminum/rubber lines coming out of it.

HOW TO KNOW IF SYSTEM IS LOW ON CHARGE?

To know if refrigerant is low,the A/C pressure test tool is required.Or you can Check the A/C lines. The Aluminium lines coming from compressor.

WHERE ARE THIS ALUMINIUM LINES?

See the diagram shown below, the yellow arrow is pointing towards it.
Here is a picture showing the a/c line coming out of the compressor.
Air conditioner Line diagram

Touch and feel the cooling line.Is it warm or cool.

WHICH LINE SHOULD BE COOL AND WHICH SHOULD BE HOT?

You should have one line coming from the compressor that is hot and one pointing in diagram that should be very cold. If you don't have one that's cold then by far the most likely cause for this would be low system charge.

HOW TO TEST THE LOW SYSTEM CHARGE?

The first thing that will need to be done is check the system charge, either with a manifold gauge set or preferred, with a recovery machine. Most likely your charge is low because of a slow refrigerant leak, or it could be low just because of natural losses. R134a molecules are small enough that they naturally escape through the rubber over time. And its natural.By time the refrigerant gets released in very slow process and refrigerant needs to be recharged.

BUT WHAT IF REFRIGERANT CHARGE IS CHECKED OK?

If the refrigerant charge is checked ok,or even after you get the refrigerant charged the problem is same as before then, its issue with compressor or expansion valve.

BUT HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT IS FAULTY OUT OF THAT?

If charge is ok then the problem could be the compressor or expansion valve. These  can be determined by looking at the system pressures.
  • If pressure is very high on the high side and very low on the low side then you have a restriction, most likely a bad expansion valve.
  • If the high side is low and the low side is high, somewhat equal pressures, then the compressor isn't working.
This details will help.
Thanks.

1997 Buick Lesabre: A/C stopped Blowing cold?

On Buick Lesabre 1997 Year model Vehicle it has Automatic Temperature  controls with separate Controls for driver's and passenger side temperature adjustment.

In this case first the A/C stopped blowing cold at passenger side and then stopped blowing at driver side.

Ok, the automatic climate control does not have vacuum controls. The blend doors are electronically controlled by the climate control unit and actuators at the blend doors.

Hence one side stopped working and then the other, this majorly indicates that the climate control module failing rather than both the driver and passenger side blend door.

If the shop doing the work does not have a scan tool that can test the climate control unit and the temperature blend door actuators, you will need to have another shop test it or have a dealer test the system.

This needs to be done before spending money on replacing the doors when it is unlikely that both have failed at once.

This details will help.
Thanks.

How to test Cars AC System?

If you need dis-assembly or replacement instructions for any other auto/car part, or you want to ask question related to your car/truck jeep problem then please leave the comment with your details, so I can provide you the required instructions and solutions.

Car AC system Testing is as follows :----
WARNING
Never expose A/C refrigerant to open flame. A poisonous gas, phosgene or mustard gas, will result.
A/C Sytem Test
Testing Air Conditioning Efficiency
Before temperature and pressure tests, the following list of items should be met:
  • Set the temperature control to maximum cool and normal AC. Some manufacturers call for MAX AC so that recirculating air is used. Be sure to check the specifications.
  • Set the blower position to high.
  • The temperature inside of the car must be stabilized (not getting cooler).
  • Engine speed must be at least 1500 rpm to ensure adequate refrigerant flow.
  • The compressor clutch must be engaged.
Air Discharge Temperatures
This chart below shows a chart of expected air discharge temperatures at different outside temperatures. The vertical temperature readings refer to actual duct readings. The horizontal readings refer to the day's outside temperature.
A chart showing expected air discharge temperatures at different outside temperatures. Courtesy of Ford Motor Company.
The drop in the air's temperature as it passes through the evaporator should be at least 20°F. It is very difficult to tell how well A/C works on a cool day.
Rules of thumb:
  • With 70°F air entering the evaporator, expect about a 20°F drop in air temperature (50°F).
  • With 80°F air entering the evaporator, expect about a 25°F drop in air temperature (55°F).
  • With 90°F air entering the evaporator, expect about a 30°F drop in air temperature (60°F).
It is important that the hood be closed during this test.
