Air conditioner blows air but not cold air

A/C is not blowing cold air, but seems to be running .

When the Air conditioner is turned ON,the Air starts blowing out.It blows the air of  same temperature as outside air.
Problem noticed on 2000 Dodge Caravan SXT model.

WHAT ARE POSSIBILITIES THAT CAN CAUSE THIS PROBLEM?

AC  blowing just a few degrees cooler than the air. This problem can be caused by

  • Faulty Compressor.
  • Faulty Expansion Valve.
  • Low refrigerant.

HOW TO TEST IF COMPRESSOR IS GETTING ENGAGED OR NOT?
Locate the compressor and view the pulley. On the front of the compressor is a pulley driven by the belt, in front of the pulley is the clutch. If the compressor is engaging then the clutch will be spinning along with the pulley.

OK,BUT WHERE IS COMPRESSOR LOCATED ON DODGE CARAVAN?

On 2000 Dodge Caravan A/C compressor is mounted on the front of the engine and has two large aluminum/rubber lines coming out of it.

HOW TO KNOW IF SYSTEM IS LOW ON CHARGE?

To know if refrigerant is low,the A/C pressure test tool is required.Or you can Check the A/C lines. The Aluminium lines coming from compressor.

WHERE ARE THIS ALUMINIUM LINES?

See the diagram shown below, the yellow arrow is pointing towards it.
Here is a picture showing the a/c line coming out of the compressor.
Air conditioner Line diagram

Touch and feel the cooling line.Is it warm or cool.

WHICH LINE SHOULD BE COOL AND WHICH SHOULD BE HOT?

You should have one line coming from the compressor that is hot and one pointing in diagram that should be very cold. If you don't have one that's cold then by far the most likely cause for this would be low system charge.

HOW TO TEST THE LOW SYSTEM CHARGE?

The first thing that will need to be done is check the system charge, either with a manifold gauge set or preferred, with a recovery machine. Most likely your charge is low because of a slow refrigerant leak, or it could be low just because of natural losses. R134a molecules are small enough that they naturally escape through the rubber over time. And its natural.By time the refrigerant gets released in very slow process and refrigerant needs to be recharged.

BUT WHAT IF REFRIGERANT CHARGE IS CHECKED OK?

If the refrigerant charge is checked ok,or even after you get the refrigerant charged the problem is same as before then, its issue with compressor or expansion valve.

BUT HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT IS FAULTY OUT OF THAT?

If charge is ok then the problem could be the compressor or expansion valve. These  can be determined by looking at the system pressures.
  • If pressure is very high on the high side and very low on the low side then you have a restriction, most likely a bad expansion valve.
  • If the high side is low and the low side is high, somewhat equal pressures, then the compressor isn't working.
This details will help.
Thanks.

1992 Chrysler Jeep Cherokee: A/C System Pressure is Same on Both High and Low?

In this condition the A.C cooling problem will be noticed.

The 1992 year Chrysler Jeep came with R12 from the factory.if Your jeep is using R134A, then it was converted.

It wasnt until late 1994-early 1995 that R134a became available.

the system calls for 38 ounces, but with R134A conversion, less is installed due to molecule differences in the refrigerant. The industry rule of thumb is 80% of called for. So for yours that will be 30ounces.

Ok, pressure should be 28-35psi on low side and 175-220psi on high side. If it were a restriction in the expansion valve, pressure would be high on the low side, but near normal on the high side.

Yours is neither sucking on the low side, nor pumping on the high side, hence the high low side pressure, and low high side pressure.

If you are positive of the system being at the correct level and compressor engaging, then only one thing causes this - weak compressor. It needs to be replaced.

So the compressor needs to be inspected and tested before getting replaced.

As per description it says compressor is faulty.

This will help.
Thanks.

How to Troubleshoot Vehicles AC Cooling Problem?

If you need dis-assembly or replacement instructions for any other auto/car part, or you want to ask question related to your car/truck jeep problem then please leave the comment with your details, so I can provide you the required instructions and solutions.

Basically on every car, cooling problems is noticed some day.The AC will cool intermittently or noise noticed from Cooling system or problems like low cooling.
There are Vast number of possibilities ,for this problem.
The details mentioned below will help you:----

If the system is noisy:
  • A belt is loose, broken or frayed.
  • The clutch, clutch coil or clutch bearing is defective.
  • The compressor mounts or braces are loose.
  • An electrical connection is loose (causing a "chattering" clutch).
  • Refrigerant or oil is overcharged, or moisture is in the system. All cases require purging the system by a certified technician.
  • The system is leaking oil and/or refrigerant.
  • The blower fan is rubbing against the case, or the blower motor is defective.
If the system cools intermittently:
  • The electrical system contains a worn or loose wiring, an improperly grounded components, or a defective switch or control module.
  • The air conditioning blower motor, speed control, or resistors need replaced.
  • The A/C clutch coil is defective.
  • The A/C clutch is slipping due to wear or low voltage.
  • Belts are loose or broken.
  • The thermostat needs adjustment or is defective.
  • The high-pressure control, low-pressure control, or suction regulator needs replaced.
If the system does not provide sufficient cooling:
  • The circuit breakers are tripped or a fuse is blown. Check for other electrical system problems, such as broken, disconnected or corroded wires.
  • The A/C blower motor needs replaced.
  • The A/C clutch is slipping.
  • The A/C clutch coil is defective.
  • The thermostat is defective or needs adjustment.
  • The condenser needs to be cleaned.
  • The receiver-dryer, accumulator, or expansion tube or valve is clogged, requiring replacement.
  • A screen in the compressor, accumulator, expansion valve, orifice tube, or receiver-dryer is clogged. In some cases, the screen can be cleaned. In other cases, multiple parts may need to be replaced.
  • The system is leaking, requiring replacement of the expansion valve, shaft seal, or hoses.
  • The system needs refrigerant.
Check the tension and condition of the air conditioning drive belt. If the belt is not a serpentine belt, it probably requires higher tension than the other V-belts. Air conditioning compressors use a good deal of power when they run. A V-belt that has been allowed to slip will be glazed and will no longer hold the pulley, even if properly tensioned.

CAUTION
Only EPA-certified technicians can purchase R-12 refrigerant, since proper recovery and recycling techniques are required to prevent damaging the environment. Improper disposal of R-12 refrigerant can result in a fine.
