Instrument Cluster Gauges Dead NO POWER

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee United States Version :


DASHBOARD GAUGES DEAD


No movement at all.


When starting the vehicle only ABS light comes on dash board for few seconds and goes OFF.


As per the problem mentioned i suggest you get the voltages checked for the instrument cluster wires.


To do that you will have to remove the instrument cluster and test it's powers, grounds an bus voltages. 


I will mention the list of wiring's to be checked with voltmeter.

The white wire in pin 3 should have battery voltage.
The black wire in pin 5 should have voltage with the key on.
The black and black/orange wires in pins 1 and 2 should have ground.

If these are ok then turn the key on and check the voltage on the white/black and violet/brown wires. These should each be close to 2.5v and fluctuating a bit.

Battery voltage should be Approx to 12volts. If no 12 volts are received then power is not reaching to the wires and that's the issue.

If battery voltage is received then other possibility for the problem is no ground voltages or loose ground wires.


PLEASE NOTE:---
On most of such cases at out auto repair garage the issue was related to ground wires.


Both of these ground wires originate at ground 304.And that is located  under the carpet to the left rear of the driver's seat. You have a couple choices at this point.


FIRST OPTION:---
Pull the seat up and check the ground. If it's ok then you'd need to work your way from there to the cluster and determine where the wires are broken and then repair them. Since both wires have lost ground either they are both broken or the issue will be the ground location itself.


SECOND OPTION:---
You can run new ground wires to both of these circuits. You can splice wires to each of these two and take them to a good grounded metal part under the dash.

And these will solve the problem.

Oldsmobile Temperature Gauge Lamp Switch?

Replacement and testing procedures.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION


The temperature gauge/lamp switch activates a warning lamp in the instrument cluster if the engine overheats. With optional instrumentation, a temperature gauge replaces the warning lamp and the temperature switch is replaced with a transducer. These sensors are self-grounded to the engine. During installation, no sealer tape should be used since it can interfere with the sensor's ground path. As a general specification, this resistance-based sensor should show about 1365 ohms at 100°F (38°C) and 44 ohms at 280°F (138°C). A special tester is recommended by the factory. Resistors of equal value may be used.

TESTING



Temperature Gauge Inoperative or Inaccurate
  1. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (gauge) sensor (usually a dark green wire).
  2. Insert a 44 ohm resistor between the connector and ground.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Does the gauge now read high, approximately 260°F (127°C)-
    1. If the gauge now reads high, check for a poor connection. If okay, replace the gauge sensor.
  4. If the gauge shows no change, check for a bad connection at the instrument cluster, or a short to voltage between the instrument cluster connector and the gauge sensor. If these circuits are okay, it may be necessary to service the instrument cluster.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Record any radio anti-theft codes, as required. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Locate the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor. It is usually below the coolant connection, just below the bleeder connection.
  3. Partially drain the cooling system to a level below the sensor.
  4. Unplug the electrical connector.
  5. Unscrew the sensor from the engine.

To install:
  1. Thread the sensor into the engine. Use care not to damage the "pigtail" wire.
  2. Reconnect the lead wire.
  3. Refill the cooling system with the proper mix of DEX-COOL® and water and properly bleed the cooling system. Please see .
  4. Check for leaks.
