1996 Jeep Cherokee Main fuse blows?

Main fuse blows when ignition switch is turned ON.

Main fuse is located under hood in engine compartment.

Its a 40amp bus fuse.

There are two possibilities

There are 2 "40 amp fuses". One is for the abs pump, and the other is for power supplying to the fuse box under  dash. If the Jeep starts and runs, then it is probably the abs pump circuit. It could be a shorted pump, or wiring harness between the pump and the relay. Try removing the abs pump relay and see if the fuse still blows. If it doesn't, then have the abs pump circuit repaired for a short to ground.

On some jeep models the ABS fuse slot will be empty,so in that case replacing the one only main fuse will help.
See below the fuse box diagram
